Ritz-Carlton will anchor a 40-storey building at 1185 Broadway in the heart of Manhattan's NoMad neighbourhood, contributing to a deluge of new hotels along the main corridor. Recent EB-5 filings have revealed the architectural expression of the tower through a series of renderings, showcasing just how the Rafael Vinoly-designed tower will fit into the streetscape.

Developed by Flag Luxury Properties, the project will replace a low-rise commercial structure with a 177-metre-tall highrise. Building permits submitted to the City in January 2016 expound plans for 164 units, multiple restaurants, a 29th floor club lounge and a 32nd floor rooftop bar. But the details provided on EB-5 materials suggest the building will instead contain 250 suites and eight luxury apartments, where purchasers can live up to 120 days every year and collect half of the unit's income the rest of the time. The $484 million development will join two other Ritz-Carlton establishments in New York City near Central Park and Battery Park.

The renderings depict a glassy slab tower punctuated by rows of vegetated bands and several outdoor spaces. Retail would occupy the ground floor, with a plethora of amenities, including two ballrooms, positioned in the floors above. Construction could begin as soon as the second quarter of 2018, followed by completion in 2021.

The proposal would be just the latest in a slew of hotels sprouting up along Broadway. Ace Hotel opened in a turn-of-the-century building in 2009, with the NoMad and Flatiron hotels then moving into the neighbourhood. A 38-storey Virgin Hotel is also expected to launch in 2019.
