The Charles Company has submitted an application to the City of West Hollywood in Los Angeles County for a 19-storey hotel inclusive of 185 rooms, 17,000 square feet of banquet and event spaces, 5,700 square feet of retail,  a 915-square-foot art gallery, and 14 apartment units. Wehoville also reports that the site at 9034 Sunset Boulevard would make way for a four-storey underground parking garage, while the building will reputedly feature a rooftop helipad.

Culver City-based R&A Design is attached to the Sunset Tower project, which would feature a series of undulating floor plates extending beyond the envelope of the cylindrical building. These projections create outdoor spaces ripe with vegetation. A three-storey podium would contain the retail and restaurant uses, with renderings showing the roof hosting a pool and other outdoor amenity spaces.

The Planning Commission and Design Review Subcommittee will review the project before it heads to Council for approval. Though the project is visually striking, it runs the risk of reviving a debate concerning the number of hotel rooms in the city, a portfolio which is expected to receive a major boost as a new round of hotels come online in the next few years. The issue was catapulted to the spotlight earlier this year when West Hollywood Mayor Lauren Meister proposed a moratorium on new hotel development.
