Uruguayan architect Rafael Viñoly is installing a modern sequel to the Willis Tower on the southwestern edge of Chicago's Grant Park. The corner of Indiana and Roosevelt is a pulsating site of construction where the world-renowned architect has partnered with developer Crescent Heights to embed a 76-storey skyscraper into the mountainous skyline of North America's fifth largest city.

The first dozen or so levels have already taken shape and they display the scale and dimensions of the tower's footprint. The 792-unit rental building will be set atop a 16-storey base where 12,000 square feet of retail space will be situated. The roof of this large podium structure, which houses a parking garage and fitness amenities, becomes a canvas for a 14,670-square-foot landscaped pool deck.

The stepped design of One Grant Park, in addition to evoking the bundled tube massing of Chicago's tallest building, has functional advantages as well. The unique geometry allows for a greater diversity of unit sizes and layouts, a fact that will be especially important when a second and even taller phase begins construction to the immediate west.

The development isn't expected to be complete until 2019, at which time it will secure a spot as the tallest building in Chicago's South Loop.
