Purveyor of modern skyscraping landmarks the world over, award-winning architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) has revealed their vision for another major development in the City of London. A historic core that is looking increasingly crowded with towers designed by some of the world's best and brightest architects, 100 Leadenhall will be the latest project in the company's celebrated portfolio.

The first images for the SOM-designed tower show an extruded form rising from assembled properties where 100, 106 and 107 Leadenhall now stand. Similar in massing to the Leadenhall Building — the Architects Journal has already taken to calling the proposal 'Cheesegrater 2' — the 56-storey tower features a tapering design with a textured glass facade.

The scheme has been envisaged for investor London & Oriental and is expected to house a major insurance company, according to the Architects Journal. SOM won an international design competition last summer, beating out experienced architects PLP and Wilkinson Eyre for the prized opportunity.

Public consultation events on the 17th and 18th of November will put the project under the public microscope ahead of the proposal's submission to City authorities next year. The development won't see the light of day until at least a few years as the existing properties are under lease for the remainder of the decade.
