The new hospital concludes over a decade of planning and construction. It includes 368 private rooms and 20 state-of-the-art operating suites. Its emergency department is over twice the size of its predecessor's. It also features the only Level 1 trauma centre between San Francisco and San Jose.

The new Stanford Hospital was designed by internationally recognized firm Rafael Viñoly Architects, who adopted a modular plan that can be adapted and expanded incrementally. The universal module measures roughly 36 by 36 metres, and is deployed in a checkerboard pattern to produce a floor plan in which hospital functions are alternated with open spaces. Emergency, imaging and interventional departments on the lower floors are organized around an atrium and entry plaza. On upper floors, nursing areas are provided with views of rooftop gardens.

The middle zone includes a combination of roof gardens and non-clinical programs. The third floor garden level surmounts the building's large second storey, and features a cafeteria, restaurant, conference centre, staff lockers and a lounge area.

As always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
Wed, 01 Apr 2020 17:00:05 +0100Marc Mitanishttps://skyrisecities.com/news/2020/04/earthcam-time-lapse-documents-rafael-vinoly-designed-new-stanford-hospital.41954Resort Townhttps://skyrisecities.com/news/2020/04/resort-town.41940
Pictured in today's Daily Photo by Flickr user yukikei, Queenstown is a popular resort and tourist destination located on New Zealand's South Island.

Queenstown, image by Flickr user yukikei via Creative Commons

Want to see your work featured in our Daily Photo? But Toronto’s thriving condo market means a broader range of ownership options for buyers — after all, a home, as such, is not a goal for all customers. Below are some tips on what to consider when deciding to buy a home or apartment in Toronto and the surrounding area.

House

The house provides owners with a lot of freedom and independence when it comes to implementing their own ideas for the choice of style and design. But this freedom has its own price. Since you make decisions, you also bear all the responsibility. If you face problems with the roof or with any other part of the house, you will have to deal with everything yourself.

The house will be a good choice for a buyer who:

wants more space;

can do something with one’s own hands and provide maintenance;

can afford to maintain the house and carry out any off-scheduled repairs;

needs privacy;

wants to completely control the design.

Condominium (or Apartment)

A condo is a house too! The urban living room of the Shimao ShenKong International Centre will be a wonderful example of this, and could become a model for the creation of key public spaces in New Town developments throughout Shenzhen. It aims to make an area that you want be outside, hang out and meet, even when it is hot—a literally cool space for the university district, where all communication space can be outside. The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey completed the six-year Bayonne Bridge roadbed-raising project last year, with the new video condensing the process into a digestable two-minute experience.

The project's necessity was underscored by an even more significant infrastructure upgrade, this one occuring roughly 3,500 kilometres to the south of the Kill Van Kull the bridge traverses. We want to create an inclusive place where everyone's values and aspirations will be shared and explored."

Royalmount, image courtesy of Carbonleo

In an effort to build a complete community with the necessary critical mass to support the complex's sizeable mall element, the developer is now planning to inject 4,500 residential units into the picture. This change requires additional rezoning, now currently being reviewed by Town of Mount Royal staff. Other changes since the initial rezoning include the removal of an outdoor stage and two performance venues, along with a 30% reduction in the planned commercial space.

Royalmount, image courtesy of Carbonleo

The newly added residential towers would be accented with a series of vertical gardens featuring plants adapted to the Québec climate. Public spaces would bring additional greenery to the site, while improving the pedestrian experience in and around the complex. These spaces include an urban woodland, a 3.8-km linear pedestrian path accessible year round, and a central park.

A pedestrian-oriented development is only possible with the help of mass transit systems, the motivation behind a covered pedestrian and bicycle link to the De la Savane metro station, where a public square and mobility hub would exist. As a result of these improved transit connections, the number of parking spaces has been reduced by 60% from 12,000 to fewer than 5,000 for the commercial component, while the residential component would be served at a rate of 0.5 spaces per unit.

Metro connection at Royalmount, image courtesy of Carbonleo

For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
Mon, 02 Mar 2020 17:00:02 +0000Jack Landauhttps://skyrisecities.com/news/2020/03/carbonleo-presents-updated-plan-royalmount-montreal.41375Chicago Sunrisehttps://skyrisecities.com/news/2020/03/chicago-sunrise.41392
A view from Chicago is shown in today's Daily Photo, shared by Flickr contributor Harry Carmichael.
