Pictures from our June trip to Philadelphia, including an excursion up to New Hope, PA.

Baltimore's Amtrak station from our Acela train that we took from Washington to Philadelphia.

Philadelphia's 30th Street Station is the heart of the region's transportation network and is Philly's primary Amtrak station. It features an art deco motif.

Our first night on the town (much like every other night) was in the Washington Square District of Philadelphia's Center City. It is also home to the region's gaybourhood.

Off the main streets are some of the skinniest and oldest streets in the United States.

This was shot from our hotel window. It is of the William Penn statue that sits high above Philly atop their City Hall.

On the fringe of the business district is a beautiful, but abandoned building that appears to have once housed a gay men's bathhouse known as "The Bellevue Health Club"...

Pop artist Robert Indiana's famous "LOVE" sculpture sits in Philly's JFK Plaza (or what has become better known "Love Plaza.")...

These simple, yet elegant, bars/cafes that sit in public squares and parks are very common in Europe (and perhaps this part of the US too) and have always striked me as something very much missing in Toronto.

The newest, tallest and some, like me, would argue the crown jewel of Philly's skyline is the recently completed Comcast Center.

The Comcast Center is the tallest building in America between New York City and Chicago and is home to the Comcast cable company.

The Comcast Center is a Robert Stern building and was completed just last year (2008).

Inside the Comcast Center's lobby is Jonathan Borofsky's "Humanity in Motion" which is quite similar to his installation at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas.

Next to the Philadelphia Museum of Art sits a statue which probably doesn't need an explanation. The Philadelphia Museum of Art is the location of Rocky's famous climb of the steps and his little dance at the top.

TD was sponsoring a major marathon that weekend in Philly and were decking out the Rocky stairs with the "Toronto Dominion" logo.

A worker installing the TD sign on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. I really have *no idea* why I took this picture. Hmmm...

From the top of the "Rocky Stairs" I also managed to grab a shot of the Cira Centre (Cesar Pelli) which sits next to the 30th Street Station and was completed in 2005.

Philadelphia Part !-Good pics!

Darkstar: I was waiting for your Philadelphia pics - I have spent quite a lot of time there including living in that area for much of the 90s.

I will mention these pics: #2,3-Philadelphia 30th Street Station - the Pennsylvania Railroad War Memorial(WW2) is centered in #3.
Any hassles taking pics there? The APD are quite vigilant there!
#12-the former Girard Bank rotunda(Now Mellon Bank I believe)on S Broad Street just S of City Hall is down below.
#15-Dilworth Plaza looking N towards the Muncipal Services Building on the W side of City Hall - note the Philadelphia City Seal in gold out front.
Dilworth Plaza was named for a former Philadelphia mayor - Richardson Dilworth - and it was built in the early-mid 70s period I believe.
#19-PRR Suburban Station - Art Deco built in the early 30s with what is now SEPTA's Suburban Station down below(SEPTA Regional Rail service)
#22-Looking SE.
#25-30 The Comcast Tower - right across the street from where I used to do work for the NRHS - I literally watched this project from when the previous buildings were demolished(one was the HQ of the PRR and subsequent RRs until the later 80s) thru all the construction and completion of the Comcast Tower which by the way is a naming-rights deal between Comcast and the Tower's owner Liberty Property Management.
Did you go down below one level to the Comcast Store and large food court with its direct entrance to Suburban Station?
Right behind the Comcast Tower is a very busy WAWA store(regional convenience store chain) along with the Robert Morris Building which housed the NRHS National HQ until February 2008 - this building was being transformed from offices to a luxury hotel to take advantage of its location.
#37-The Rocky statue is in a much better place since it was relocated from the front of South Philadelphia's Spectrum a few years back. I seem to recall that it was commissioned by none other then Sylvester Stallone himself.
#40-Classic view down the Ben Franklin Parkway towards the heart of Center City Philadelphia. Info and insight by LI MIKE
