Yes. We have strategies that may be good (i.e. harm reduction strategies, community treatment instead of institutions) but are not full solutions themselves and require greater wrap around supports to make them successful. That doesn't end at supports for the individual either, but must include...

    General Food & Dining Thread

Eh, it made it a few years in a real tough hospitality environment. Luckily, there are plenty of people in Edmonton who seemingly want to lose money in the restaurant business... I'm sure we'll see another rendition of the concept in a few years.

    Edmonton Real Estate Market

I'll still never get over Schanks closing maybe two months before I moved right by it in the west end

I was told they're building that within the Strathcona refinery plant site north of Baseline Rd. The work on the site south of Baseline is probably all infrastructure for supporting the renewable diesel plant... was just curious what exactly they're building. Overall, it's cool see that property...

    Miscellaneous

Imperial Oil has been continuing with moving immense amounts of earth on the Texaco refinery/tank farm site. I have to stop for pics next time I'm out that way, it's almost shocking to see. I initially thought it was for reclamation efforts prior to building their renewable diesel plant, but...

    Edmonton Oilers

Agreed ^. Really want to see the Oil win a playoff series at home this year. Haven't won one at home since against the Sharks in '06

    Federal Politics

"Smith says the Trudeau government bases its decisions on who has had the most success lobbying the prime minister and it leaves many places out in the cold." Guess it takes one to know one huh

If you're spending $5m+ on a home in Edmonton, it's likely not your only home, and you probably already have home(s) in whatever cities you desire. Reminds me of the weird paradigm of housing: The more expensive it is, the less time the owner likely spends in it.

Haven't read it, so maybe I'm about to spew a ton of nonsense, but ICE District is a great example to be used in the discussion of at what point does de-risking private sector projects via gov't subsidy make sense when considering the resulting externalities. The City spent future increases in...

    Edmonton | Rogers Place | ?m | ?s | Katz Group | HOK

I took a class in uni that beat the "sports stadiums do not provide enough economic benefit to outweigh subsidized costs" drum pretty hard, albeit it was more focused on the US where the norm is fully funding stadiums with public purse. Not sure there is much of an argument left that ICE...

    Downtown

My favourite is the property across the street with Yorkton's "Highrise Development Site" sign that is so old it's legally allowed to drink in all 50 states. (Seen here in 2007)

Cycling and Active Transportation in Edmonton

I complete agree. Lighting is important, but not nearly as important as getting the network expanded and connected.
