With the parking structure at Burlington GO, the space between the rail corridor and the structure is used as the Kiss n Ride. That's at least a somewhat functional use for it.

Jan 03, 2019:
The parking garage is nearing completion, with framing starting to be added to the side for glazing.

Given that we can't really add any more trains on the Milton line, is there really much point in these massive parking structures? The line is definitely well, used, but when they're only anticipating a 30% increase in usage up to 2030, is it really needed? I kinda agree with whoever said that I'd rather see this money spent on building new track which actually might help improve service.

Barring that, build the damn subway to Mississauga already.

I have kinda made peace with the premise that if we are going to accumulate autos at a GO station, it makes sense to stack them so that the overall acreage tied up in this is reduced. Otherwise there will be no more useful development of the station campus.

Here’s a thought.....should some portion - let’s start at 20% - of the available parking at a GO station be withheld from use until 09:30? My impression from riding GO is that the lack of parking is crippling ridership on the new 2WAD lines to Unionville and Aurora. The traditional 9 to 5 commuters would cry foul, but - just as the Jameson ramp to the Gardiner is closed at rush hour (amusing to see the lineup form ten minutes before it reopens) - it’s a more rational use of the free parking and it might nudge some desirable behavious - carpooling at rush hour, and directing some of the outrage towards the agencies that ought to be improving last-mile transit.

GO could probably squeeze in another peak-direction train or two on the Milton Line, as long as they're within the AM and PM periods GO trains are already running, as long as there's capacity at Union Station and in the USRC for those additional trains. They've been doing that several times already.

The garage at Cooksville could also allow for some development of the land closest to Hurontario Street as well.

Massive parking structures are exactly because they can't add more trains. Frequent service is what negates massive parking structures. AM/PM peak service causes them. Rather than have a stream of use you have a sudden surge of people coming to the stations and leaving, requiring the use of cars, and many of them.

And ontop of that apparently they have floated the idea of 14 car GO trains, since they cant get any more capacity on the lines.

The new 5400HP MPI locos can handle 16 car trains.

They would have to lengthen platforms but thats usually relatively easy.

I do think the massive parking structure is necessary in the case of Cooksville. I know many people who specifically don't drive to this station because they know they can't find parking. They'll either use other methods of transportation or get dropped off. Build extra parking and more people will choose to drop off their cars there. You can see by the amount of cars in the drop off and just the amount of people on the morning trains that there is a necessity for the extra parking space.

You seem to be saying we should build parking structures to provide an incentive to not use other methods (presumably transit, drop off /pick up, car pooling?) to get to the station.

I think parking is an "evil necessity" at GO stations but this is the first time I have heard someone suggest that we should build parking to stop people from using other methods of getting to stations (usually the argument is that we need to build parking because without it people will just not go to the station at all - ie they will drive to work).

I definitely don't think this kind of investment really makes sense on the Milton line. Better to invest the money on inner city stations or big expansions to stations on lines with AD2W service. Upgrading Exhibition, Danforth, (Downsview Park which doesn't have canopies for some ridiculous reason), etc. etc. to Dundas West - Weston levels (large canopies more amenities) seems like a much better use of the money especially since those lines have more capacity to be filled especially on the LS line with all the new trains.

I'd also say that parking is something thats more acceptable if adding it also brings the impetus to improve the shelter and amenities of a station.

Well that I can't agree with. Mississauga gets precious little transit investment. I would take these parking garages over the money being spent elsewhere, but I still think actually improving the service on Milton would be preferable. The other lines are already planned for far better improvements than Milton will ever get.

4 additional cars x 10 trainsets = $120M capital expense.

Put that money into track, you might carry the same people with only nine trainsets, which is another $45M saved.

Talking to GO Personal, the plan idea to fence off the platform on car west of the accessibility platform died due the push back of riders who refused to walked to the next car to get on/off the train. A staff member is station on the platform for safety issues as well open the door.

The glazing for the stair wells is being installed on both sides of the parking structure for the west end. Should start to see the main glazing that is different from the stair will being later this month, since most of the steel support for it are in pl,ace.

Work on rebuilding the out of service platform is supposed to start in April along with the new station..

Steel framing up for the new station and it sits well south of where the original one was. Not sure how the new tunnel will connect to the existing one without closing the current one down for a few months.. The existing stair and elevator as well the structure have to be remove to make the new connection. Got to love that steel mesh with holes being cut into it.

Well the Milton line does see some use but not a lot. Metrolinx only cares for the MetrolinxLakeshore line for the most part.
