I find that bright top way too dominating though. And the diamond lit parts needs to stick out more. So scaling down one, while scaling up the other would be the cat's nyaa for me.

Okay I almost fully take back the extent of my criticism in my previous post with these new pics that ushahid posted above from richardjohnson_ca on Instagram. It definitely looks much better in those actually quite striking. Perhaps still a bit too subtle — could have been a punchier visually — but not nearly as disappointing at it seemed to me from the previous pictures. It seems like how this look may depend highly on the photo and the lighting conditions and camera settings. I'll be very interested to see how it looks with my own eyes when I'm in that part of the city again sometime in the future!

I feel like part of the issue with the lights on the diamonds is that they're trying to get a point source spotlight to project light too far and too intensely down a narrow beam than it can reasonably do. If the diamonds were half the size I think this plan would have worked out perfectly, but the design at this size is perhaps a bit stretching what can be done with this style of lighting. I think the light is getting too diffuse and simply brightening it might not make a significant impact because the light just can't reach far enough in a focused way. And even if some amount of brightening could help, there may be a ceiling on how bright then can make these lights without making them too blindingly bright for people inside the building.

Some of today's bike ride shots showing the bottom of the tower from under the highway, and from near Union Station.

In Phase 1 they had to build a retaining wall beside the tracks while one already exists here in phase 2. I wonder how they incorporate a new crash wall.
