Blue for Conservatives? Red Sky City? Blue Sky thinking. Yeah, I saw it when I visited and I thought, "well that's kind of obvious" and "what a waste of money", but I kind of like it. These marketing things are always meant to be very simplistic.

As someone who does branding for a living...every time I see that stupid Blue Sky City sign, it pisses me off.

Not only was it a pointless waste of effort and resources just to end up with result that's worse than what it replaced, the visual and written emphasis on blue just drives me nuts. Blue is the color of the turnip eaters up north. Or Toronto. Or BC. Yes, our skies are a nice blue...but we're Calgary... our brand color is red. Flames are red. Stamps are red. Calgary Tower is red. Stampede is red. Buses are red. Peace Bridge is red. City flag is red. My face is red just writing this.

One may love or hate red, but it carries decades of brand equity for this city. In branding, consistency and repetition is king. That doesn’t mean everything must look the same, but when something represents the City at a broader level like this, at the very least we shouldn’t undermine that equity by adopting a color associated with our main rivals. Doing so would be like making Coca-Cola blue.
THATS WHAT I'VE BEEN SAYING! Calgary is red and red is Calgary! Calgary is the red team and Edmonton is the blue team this is a fundamental law of the universe

I like the branding and I think it's catching on. I've seen others call Calgary that on Instagram.

My only issue is the signs at city limits. The shade of blue is all wrong - we have paler blue skies, not that deeper blue they picked.

Maybe it was meant to go with the blue ring by the airport? Lol!

Edit: It reminds me of the terrible rebranding of ACAD spearheaded by the new President when I was there in '05/06. The logo they came up with was awful. Not a big fan of the new University of the Arts one now either.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I even like the palette, fonts, symbols - it's just the name that bins the whole brand identity.
