You seem to be forgetting that it will be taxpayer dollars paid by those on the sidelines that will end up paying for this… :(

If this is what it takes for Westrich to be able to afford to buy it from Regency, those sideline dollars will end up in Regency’s pockets as a reward for bestowing this on us .

Exactly my thoughts. Put a basketball court there in the summer and try for an ice rink in the winter, at least until it's ready for build out.
 
Well as I said earlier with The Shack on the corner that's one hopeful business that can be there for a while at least and the parking lots could have some food trucks and a temporary basketball or some sort of other courts could be also put in there so I guess we'll see if the space can be better utilized. The sad thing is, there are probably a few people out there that will be so happy to see a parking lot right there, for their own usage.

I mean no disrespect to Westrich, but this is akin to making a deal with the devil.

We get arguably the greatest eyesore in the city cleaned up and ownership is transferred to a company who has developed more inner-city space in Edmonton than any other company in the past ten years.

In exchange, we walk back on numerous planning and land use principles and best practices, potentially setting ugly precedent in the process, while receiving no guarantee to see anything built beyond a seacan and pavement.

Sadly I fear you are correct. With Westrich the lot will get developed eventually, but it'll be a 6 storey wood frame project that would easily blend into Sherwood Park. On the other hand getting rid of empty lots is still a priority for Edmonton.
 
I’m not saying I support this…but people act like we didn’t get Ultima and Encore from westrich. Two of our better condos downtown. I don’t think it’s fair to act like they couldn’t do something solid here. Lots of other lots/lane owners we can pick on more imo. 104ave has a dozen between 100st and 112st. South of jasper has another dozen.

Lots of land we gotta get developed. At least westrich has some pockets, a level of presence locally, and a consistent track record of building this decade.

Windsor park tower anybody? Not a bad proposal…
 
Well, I think the battle I'm going to choose is not to complain too much about this project. Option two is we can leave the site as it is and just keep complaining about it and keep wondering why no one will do anything about it and waits and wait and wait. Should we have something much nicer, should we have no more new parking lots, definitely we should. But I will at least admit one thing, I'm not the one footing the bill on this. Now if I had an extra 30-40 million dollars or whatever it would take to build a tower there, I have my choice what I would want to put there for sure. But someone else has the bucks not me so they get to choose fortunately or unfortunately what happens now and when something bigger and better it gets built, it's their call. So for now I'll be satisfied with the site getting cleaned up and just hope that they will be able to come up with something much sooner than later. And again compared to some other properties that will not see any work done for easily another 20 years because there hasn't been work done on the past 30 years, I'm much more hopeful for this site at least. Am I giving up, no but I'm choosing my battles
