Is the new bridge replacing the other? The west landing seems to cross into the path of the existing corridor way too early for a tunnel under it. Also, the Gardiner Hybrid re-alignment with its upcoming DVP on-ramp appears destined to go where the existing bridge is or very close to it. That bridge only has 2 rail lines in use, will they fit on the new bridge along with the Ontario Line?

Old bridge isn't going anywhere. The new bridge is strictly for OL trains, however there will be a shift for the GO track that heads North before the Don river, which will give more room for the OL trains to go underground.

That's a shame, the old bridge will not be fun to go under with the revitalized Don River's trail. Maybe it'll be rebuilt for ALTO ...decades from now.

So is the OL dipping immediately into a tunnel or following the rail corridor for a while?

I made an edit to my post with more details and a picture to give you a better idea of what the track layouts will look like after all the construction.

Is anyone making a time lapse video of the bridge moving?
I'd be very surprised if Metrolinx doesn't have one for it. I'm working on one for the construction of the bridge as a whole but there will only be a couple frames of the move. I will share a GIF in the next couple days.

This really seems like the best design choice to get to from side of the river to the other. What was the original plan for the relief line if anyone knows?

A tunnel under the old Eastern Avenue alignment - though that may have been expensive as there's a bedrock valley in there, so it may have been cheaper to daylight it over the river.

There is no real need to widen the bridge in the future. It's already five tracks wide. With the OL on the rail embankment, there is no practical to put in more than four tracks for GO, VIA and ALTO. So yes, as others have pointed out, GO is in the process of building a bottleneck just as ALTO is planning a route into Toronto.

Even if underground was a possibility, you've got to admit that an above-ground bridge is much more aesthetically pleasing.
For riders and non-riders alike. The view from inside the train coming across the bridge with that skyline right in front of you is going to look incredible.

Indeed, the view from an elevated train past building and houses is always preferable ...
