I think those are for light standards; it's this section, around the +15, that is shown and has no trees.

When will Calgary learn that tree boxes don't work in its climate? The most successful way to implement tree canopies in Calgary is through trenches
Most new streetscape projects I've seen underway these days are using trenches/silva cells like 33rd ave sw, 8th street sw, 11 street se
 
That first photo looks like they're already putting the furniture in place, and this isn't supposed to open until 2027. I did hope they could get it done in time for the 2026 tourist season but seems unlikely. With Olympic Plaza, Glenbow out of commission, we're missing some key cultural attractions downtown.

Come on, I can’t be the only one triggered by these seemingly random perforated grills. Ruins what woukd otherwise be a very sleek facade.
It is a reclad, not a new build. From the street, it works pretty well. Unless you're morphing into a bird I wouldn't worry about how it looks from this angle.
