Note: there is no concourse behind those alcoves, one would have to be build under the road to connect to the existing concourse. @WB62 if you could kindly share your map showing the concourse level directly under the road, it would be easier to picture how it could be expanded west to align with the western moat.

No problem! For reference the 7 squares on the middle sections upper left corner are the future retail locations for the moat, seen in the rendering you posted:

Thanks! Looks like there’s room to build a second independent or extended concourse just below the road, level with the moat with an escalator leading down to platform level at the west end of the platform where there are currently no entrances. Seems like a good way to distribute both the concourse and platform traffic.

I forgot to say this in the other message, the curve of the subway tunnel up to University isn’t shown in that diagram, I’m not exactly sure how far the curve starts from the platforms, but there might not be any space to add an entrance on the west side

Even if the tunnel curves up to University, the tunnels are 3 levels below street level. The existing concourse is 2 levels down. The west moat is 1 level down. A concourse directly below the road level with the western moat wouldn't interfere with the subway tunnel. This conceptual concourse could end just above the end of the platform, with an escalator leading down to where the platform ends, making the shape of the tunnel beyond that point irrelevant.

If I recall correctly, when the second platform was built and they dug up Front Street with a gigantic hole visible down to platform level, all the utilities, including legacy utilities were removed entirely and relocated to the north lane and sidewalk across from the Royal York Hotel. There should be nothing under the south lane.

I updated your map @WB62 to add my proposed layout. Escalators to platform level would be towards the end where they'd land at the western edge of the existing platforms. The concourse would have connections to the PATH and the Royal York Hotel.

I’m assuming this light fixture has always been there based on the dust, but how come I don’t remember it being this ornate? Am I losing it? Haha

It won't there for long. The new lighting is being installed within weeks, I'm hearing.

As much as I appreciate a nice chandelier, what I'm looking forward to is the replacement of the sodium lights that give a grim appearance to such a beautiful space. LED overhead lighting and recessed uplighting is going to completely transform the Great Hall. I don't think people are ready for how impactful of a change it'll be. Can't wait!

I have been ready for 5+ years. :)

This thread started 20 years and 9 months ago, so I'm going to claim a little more than 5 years, myself!

The lights will be installed soon but due to Toronto's municipal bureaucracy on setting up an infrastructure to pay for the hydro bills, which union is allowed to install the lightbulbs and who is allowed to flip the switch, the Great Hall will be dark until 2032.

I thought I'd do a little digging back through the thread and archived early versions of the Database file.

The first version of our Database file for this site is from June 14, 2011, and the lead-off image was this:

Different chandeliers of course, but that's the earliest date I can pin an image of new chandeliers on for sure, but it's quite possibly from an early August, 2009 announcement about changes to the station. Images from our thread posts of that time are mostly lost (we didn't store images on our own servers until 2011 IIRC).

There are some funny posts from back then. Here's a favourite from Dec 1, 2009:

The Star has just figured out that this project will take 5 years. Note the over-the-top headline.

Sigh. Just made the mistake of reading some of the comments on that article. Why do I do that to myself?

Where's The Piano™ ? We never did get a piano and it was featured so prominently in the renderings.
