i believe they built the bridge and expanded Exhibition GO for exactly this reason as an alternative to the tunnel.
Thats for passenger flow, I was talking more about pedestrian refuge and congregation areas around the stadium in this spot.

Too bad the SkyDome was made to no longer have the rotating level 100 seating for football and soccer, just a few years ago ( if I remember the timeline correctly). SkyDome could have had its deserved moment in the global spotlight with some needed upgrades and renovations of course. (and directly drawing attention to the CN Tower and downtown Toronto for each of the 6 games as part of a truly international event. I have definitely enjoyed some TFC games at BMO Field but for the World Cup the SkyDome would have been a perfect venue in my opinion.

The reason the seating was redesigned was to make the Skydome a true baseball park. The renovations that have happened aside from the seating would never have happened unless the conversion of the seating occurred. Rogers simply would not have spent the money. So the options here would have been to leave the seating so they could use the Skydome for like 2 world cup games, and none of the upgrades happen, or the upgrades happen but the games move to BMO field. I think what happened was the best overall choice.

Unless you're suggesting the taxpayers should have paid for the upgrades that Rogers ended up paying for, if it meant keeping the rotating seating.

Anyway, the Skydome got plenty of airtime during the World Series last year. Let's give BMO Field a chance to shine.

Ive never personally seen a soccer game at the Skydome but I've heard the atmosphere and viewing experience wasnt great. While the views of the cn tower and increased capacity are great, soccer is best experienced in a soccer-specific stadium with the seating stands right at the sidelines and behind the goals. Helps with acoustics and atmosphere too.

Even a stadium with an olympic track around the field ruins the atmosphere

I've been to 3 or 4 soccer games at SkyDome and the atmosphere isn't bad if the attendance is good.

The roof was closed for the 2 TFC games as they were winter games.

I believe the only game Beckham played in Toronto was at the SkyDome

Update from today. Construction of the North bleachers has started.

Didn't go to any soccer games but had been to a ton of football games there and the configuration was just not good for spectators. The dome is much better having had their recent renos to make it a better ballpark than it would have been if they kept it multi-use.

I agree Toronto theoretically should have a "grander" rectangular stadium for a city its size but we don't so we work with what we have. At the very least BMO Field has greatly improved since it first opened (and felt like some temporary bleachers in a parking lot).

EDIT: I apologize for the image, times are tight and I couldn't afford more pixels

We should bid for a World Cup which acts as a catalyst to build a world class stadium on a deadline known years in advance and with the expectations of the eyes of the world on us…

…oh wait.

Exactly haha, but no lets argue about the costs instead and put together a stadium 6 months before kickoff.

I second that. That North stand building is doing wonders on making it look like a real stadium.

Regarding the topic of the Rogers Centre. I believe FIFA is very picky with those kind of things, specially in a world cup. They Give NFL stadiums a pass because it is the US and because they are not so different to a football stadium but playing football in a Baseball stadium... that is a hard no.

I dont think Nfl stadiums are getting a "pass". Most are world class and perfect for soccer.

The NFL stadiums aren't really getting a pass though.

A few of them had to renovate in order to make room for field width that FIFA requires. SoFi in LA was one of them. There were actually a few cities that backed out of bidding because of that.

A lot of the ones that ended up as host stadiums have been forced to convert to grass and remove lower sections because of the narrow width.

They aren't getting a pass but they are also not perfect

Its not they were forced, real grass was always a requirement that they knew going in. There is always work to be done on any stadium such as removing all team branding, replacing seats as required, exterior work etc to prepare for a fifa or uefa tournament.
The point is, these are mostly billion dollar ($5.5 billion for Sofi) stadiums that are set up to host large crowds, amenities are there, food, sanitation etc. Nowhere in the world is the "stadium game" as competitive as in the nfl at the moment. 25 year old stadiums are outdated and being torn down or completely overhauled all over the country.
