While this proposal is not a dramatically large development, for many it might be an important one to watch for the cultural impact. The land use change for the building the Ship and Anchor is in goes to CPC this week:

LOC2025-0080
  • 532 17 AV SW
  • 534 17 AV SW (The Ship and Anchor)

Trying to read the tea-leaves here for what the expected impact will be to Calgary's most famous pub. Seems like a fairly substantial project, but curious attempt to retain the existing office building where the Ship is. Perhaps that's a sign they want to keep it operating in the same location? Not sure how that would work in practice, but otherwise I don't really get why you'd preserve the existing building that's fairly obsolete.

Anyone have any theories or behind-the-scenes on this one?

I hope this is one of those cases where the developer knows the real value in their property and does whatever needs to be done to keep the gold mine that is the Ship operating.

Appears to be essentially an office conversion adding several floors with an additional new building attatched to it. You can tell it shares a lot of design cues with Manu Chugh's other project where the Denny's is

Ship and Anchor owner worried proposed development could ‘contribute to our demise’

Someone needs to show the Ship what happened when Marda Loop businesses said loudly and often, "don't come here." Their worry is about residents complaining about the live music. Isn't that on the residents? If the Ship isn't violating bylaws, that's just too bad if you rent an apartment and don't realize your downstairs neighbour is a busy live music venue.
