Ys, it DOES look like a platform canopy but from the drone shot it seems VERY odd to me to be building the canopy before you build the platform. Also why would a canopy need such deep foundations??
Order of operations does seem bizarre, I imagine the roof structure will just get in the way. But the foundation doesn’t look all that deep compared to other new GO stations. For example:
My assumption was that the reason they're building all these platforms with knee-high concrete cuffing around the walls and pillars is that someday they will raise the height of the platform to that level, and this saves them having to deal with conflicts at that stage. (All the glass and all the electronic fixtures are already at an appropriate height, etc.) They'll have to rework things like stairways and raise the heights of doorways, but that's easier than rebuilding the whole platform.

To illustrate, Weston Station when it was under construction.

As with any canopy built in the past 15 years, they all have extra deep foundations/footings in preparation for raising the platforms.

Great pics. Forgive the ignorance, but where exactly is the station box / are the station boxes going to be? Is there just one, somewhere around Broadview?
This should give you an idea. This is looking South/East with Eastern on the left, Broadview on the right.

Thanks! I guess I've come to realize an incorrect assumption on my part. Given the big ridership projections, I had assumed a nice, big station box under much of the rails and platforms in this image. You know, a place to wait for transit, get out of the weather, maybe buy something or have a bite to eat.

But, from the construction site pictures, it looks like a fair amount of the works will be sitting on the berm in the final version. A small-ish station box looks likely on the east or west (or both?) sides of Broadview. As for Eastern Ave, there is no apparent station box yet. Rather, it looks like a person could take stairs directly up to the GO platforms, or use the hallway-type thing tacked onto the north side of the berm between Eastern and Broadview to access the Ontario Line.

But maybe I'm still misunderstanding the plans?

Guess I had been hoping for an urban style of train station, with interior space big enough for activities and place-making.

I wonder if they need to install one last diagonal gray support under each final arch piece like on the other side or if they aren't necessary because they will be supported on both sides right after installation.

Yes not huge but there will be a street level “station” box off of Eastern in the snips below….Definitely not Union Station scale whatsoever but definitely a station box fronting onto Eastern as per the snips attached. That said I have no idea what that “plaza” area is (The large grey area immediately west of the Eastern entrance is…Perhaps will be a transit oriented Condo or other building… that’s a big space for a public realm which I don’t believe is part of the plan here…

It's impossible to look at those embarrassing renders of this utter garden shed and think 'yeah, Metrolinx really is doing a good job'.
I am not sure it is fair to blame Metrolinx here. This is a budget constraint issue and although disappointing, I am hoping they are future proofing for the possibility of a more enhanced station once development begins in the area. TBH, I would rather build a more utilitarian station "for now" if it means we can build more transit elsewhere.

There is no new station coming. This is embarrassing and if costs are to blame, that's also fundamentally on Metrolinx. Project management 101: control your team, control your schedule, control your budget. Metrolinx does none of those things.
