Yes, this is kind of like the C or D student arguing it is not worth the effort to become a B or A student. It becomes a self fulling situation.

The last time Edmonton made any serious effort to be a tourist destination was when a big mall was built here in the early 1980's. Of course that has little or no benefit for downtown.

Every since then we have been mostly resting on our laurels as meager as they are.

Well there's many types of tourism - sport tourism, concert tourism, summer festival tourism.

Explore Edmonton, which just received $11 million from the city, is another example of the city making a serious effort to bring major events to city and attract people to come here.

The major effort to bring World Cup here was another serious endeavour that could have had legacy benefits. Same for the effort to bring World Expo here.

Yes, I agree there are different types of tourism and the $11 million does actually give me some hope that our city is becoming more serious about this.

However, unfortunately we haven't had much success getting big new events here in recent years with World Cup being an example.

Also we get big outdoor concerts because of stadium built in the 1970's and most our big summer festivals were started in the 1980's. They are good, but I feel we need to do more now than just rely on the tried and true.

When I went by the food area on the second level that never went ahead, due to COVID at the time I think, the seating area was quite full of people at lunch time today.

When the heck are they going to put in some food places in there?

It makes no sense. Every time I've been through there during lunch hours, it's full of people eating lunches they've picked up from elsewhere, brought from home, or had delivered. Rice Howard Place, which currently has, what, four occupied floors?, is soon to have a full (almost full?) food court. I really can't understand how there would be no business case for that food hall to be full—especially with the added benefit of pre- and post-event crowds, which other places like RHP wouldn't get.

The food court is too big and should be repurposed for something else. You think they'd piggy back off the Arena events in some way, but nope.

Hopefully the floor plate can be cut through and the lower level can be integrated with a portion of the current food court. There is a balcony which remains unused.

It really looks terrible though.

Maybe it’s just wishful thinking on my part, but I feel like it could easily support a variety of offerings and be successful. There isn’t really much within a close walk for quick food on the go unless you take the awful walk down 104 to Harvey’s or Tim’s/Wendy’s. The hotel, arena, offices, and several highrise condo/apartments are literally right there. Put some TVs up in the seating areas, open the patio, and you’ve got the best food court in the city.
