They might yet install the perforated metal plates seen in the renderings (but if I were an occupant, I am not sure I would find them desirable).

Well, the (unfavourable) preliminary report on this project came out last March and nobody mentioned it, so technically it is something "new" in this thread.

Snacks: Rare finds, old favourites, flavours needed!

You are forgetting the layer of gold leaf, but then again it's not a Western tradition! I think the beef would have propelled that risotto's price far beyond the already excessive $85. But it was money well-spent because I'm still laughing at it 20 years later.

Snacks: Rare finds, old favourites, flavours needed!

I agree, morels are much better. I do recall an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink risotto I ordered (while snickering) at the defunct North 44. It had lobster, truffles, foie gras, and caviar, and I was tempted to ask if they had used Dom Pérignon as the wine. It was an absurd dish and I just...

Snacks: Rare finds, old favourites, flavours needed!

My craving for chips started basically when the pandemic began, and recently I have tried a few flavours by Brets, a French company, that are sold at the grocery store in Manulife Centre. I have to say I'm a bit puzzled. "French Fry sauce flavour" is actually a bit sweet and mustardy, with a...

I thought it would be obvious by now why the Tokyo Smoke at 1 Bloor East closed a few months ago.

News on retail chains (was: New Mall Retail)

That's what I would ask as a professional translator, but I don't know how you could get cardamom flavour without actual cardamom. Although I once bought a gluten-free "pumpkin pie" only to discover that there was no actual pumpkin in it...

I see Loblaws still has work to do to improve its translations. It should be "Arôme de mangue et de cardamome". A beginner's mistake. But it used to be worse... I laughed out loud years ago when I saw a President's Choice "Sticky Pudding" in a store. In French, they were calling it a "Pouding...

President Joe Biden's United States of America

I am a bit relieved for my husband, an American with dual citizenship who votes in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He was dismayed by the prospect of a Republican landslide, and I was puzzled at how relatively sanguine many Americans are at having what I consider outright traitors running for...

    Premier Doug Ford's Ontario

Apparently Viamonde decided to remain open today. I doubt they can remain open much longer after that.

    Novel Coronavirus COVID-19 (nCoV-2019)

No extreme measures have been implemented in a long time, and people in Québec are generally more flippant about the whole thing (that's where I'm from, so I understand their mentality). Everything has been wide open for months. Yesterday, Québec even removed the requirement for people with...

    PM Justin Trudeau's Canada

We cannot ask immigrants to fulfill any specific need or send them wherever we want. Once you are a permanent resident, you are free, period.

    Premier Doug Ford's Ontario

The premier is just the head of government. It's what the government does that matters. Generally I don't care about the "leader". Ronnie Burkett's puppets are more compelling than any of those guys. It's the policies I care about.

    Premier Doug Ford's Ontario

The entire point of a constitutional charter of rights is that it supercedes incompatible legislation, and it is the courts that are tasked with interpreting the constitution. Governments can avoid this by passing legislation that actually respects the constitution, imagine that. If we start...

    Premier Doug Ford's Ontario

Yes and back when the Charter was created, I thought it was extremely naive to imagine that politicians would always use it appropriately. But for that you need politicians of good will and they are in short supply.
  17. Bayer

    Premier Doug Ford's Ontario

I am getting seriously annoyed by all those politicians who consider the Charter and provincial human rights legislation as disposable.

    Novel Coronavirus COVID-19 (nCoV-2019)

It is possible to disagree with people of good will, but politicians who spread misinformation and endanger kids are nothing but trash, and so are those who vote for them.

2022 election - who is running for mayor?

Nothing happened "en masse" in this election considering the minuscule turnout. I voted for Penalosa, but I don't think reelecting Tory is a disaster. He is relatively competent; there was no reason to rush to the polls to dislodge him, unlike his late predecessor.

    2022 Municipal Election: Council Races

Happy for Saxe, the only candidate who knocked on my door (twice actually!). I see her as progressive but pragmatic. We shall see. Disappointed in Tory's huge majority and in the minuscule turnout.
