One can follow the line on DMap. By clicking on the line you get the age and the materials. A gis folk would likely be able to use the data set to make a quick map of similar pipes.

This was interesting: It is good thing options are being considered. It’s bad if penny wise pound foolish thinking has delayed investigating options until the emergency declaration.

Anyone who wanted to explore on DMap could check. Open data might have a similar downloadable product. Age and material is available.

This is an interesting article which notes a standards change in the early 70s to lower the robustness of prestressed concrete pipes. Eeek. If true, I bet we now get a five year program to replace them all from the 70s...

    Calgary | BMO Centre Expansion | 25m | 5s | CMLC

Perhaps the province and city should have thought of that before going all in on the BMO.

Those are more of a collective action problem for hotels: they recognize marketing is required, but if they were to market independently they would need to spend more not less, due to free riders dropping out. If the hotel association wished, they could ask for the end of the fee. Of course...

    Roads, Highways & Infrastructure

Most expensive part of the project with approximately 1200 users in morning peak out of 16,000 road users at the intersection. All to remove one interaction with a light, which could be removed with an intersection redesign at Heritage Meadows Way and Road. The juice isn't worth the squeeze.

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

It missed the cycle for this four year budget and wasn’t urgent, ready, or a priority enough to make the adjustment process. There will be a choice to make: should this be simultaneous to Greenline construction (everything done at once in exchange for more disruption to businesses).

What helps is certainty. What is worse is promising tax breaks and then not doing it immediately. The province may not realize but they just froze all hotel development. Also I am sure the province will issue a report that calls on cities to put in tax incentives as the province has empowered...

The important part re:Olympics would be accessing extra special money which is very rare. Alas! The sales effort around that was a dogs breakfast.

Very disappointed that the Olympics weren't mentioned in this article. BMO was originally an Olympics project, as was the event centre and the field house as then conceived.

    Calgary | Green Line LRT | ?m | ?s | Calgary Transit

It is something that sounds like a good idea until you actually try to do it and realize unless the building was designed that way from the start it is very hard. Bankers Hall has the under ground conference centre for this future purpose.

    Calgary | Green Line LRT | ?m | ?s | Calgary Transit

If you did that too many people would be highly irrational and try to take the green line downtown instead of walking to the red line even when going south. That would then drive costs in a myriad of ways.

It has to be very elevated due to safety standards (12 or 14 metre clearance over to of rail). Plus have assumed given the city has done everything possible to remain underground in the core that it remained a very strong political preference.

    Water main break discussion

tbh I am not sure the city has strong enough policy tools … I’d expect an emergency council meeting soon to authorize some crazy fines and prison time. Council has broad powers: I doubt a bypass like an above ground, on road pipeline is practical. Really comes back to original design specs —...

7th Ave is the most minimal I think. Shallow, no mezzanine. The Beltline Stations since they're underground have to be deeper underground due to the Red Line Tunnel. That means the station box is already excavated, and you can choose either to backfill, or use the space for stuff. For various...
