    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

As an example, this was opened within a new condo development only 5 minutes walk from Union Station and Scotiabank Arena. It has the basic amenities - gyms, pools, multipurpose rooms and not much else but very accessible...

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

This might be the wrong thread but since the discussion is ongoing, is there a particular reason why Calgary has very few publicly run rec centres? We have the Y, other privately-operated facilities (Repsol, Vecova), local community associations, a couple city facilities (Southland, Village...

And as we spend billions of taxpayer funds for a transit station at it's doorstep, the city decides to throw away a prime recreation facility because of a couple down years due to a once in a generation health crisis.

Absolutely. Things would be much worse if we didn't get the last round of rain and cooler temps, even the reservoirs are approaching normal levels. Hopefully this spells for a smoke free July/August...

A new visitor to the city is likely consuming much less than 350L average per capita. They'll eat out most of the day and not do many of the water consuming activities (watering lawns, washing cars, laundry). Not to mention more of the city's population is out and about, which I'd think reduces...

    Roads, Highways & Infrastructure

For a government that loves to tout jurisdiction so much, we really should push harder to upload Glenmore and Crowchild to the province. That's exactly what happened in Toronto recently with the province taking over the DVP and Gardiner, with the latter being a huge maintenance expense.

    Water main break discussion

There's probably a cost component and available space issue. Twin pipes next to each other won't really do much considering if one burst, the other is probably severely damaged too, and two pipes to maintain instead of one. Two redundancy lines, they'll essentially need two ROW that is large...

Not to mention it’ll overlap with Stampede. I’m not sure what the consumption levels are during previous Stampedes but with so many extra people in the city, it’s got to be substantially higher.

    Calgary | BMO Centre Expansion | 25m | 5s | CMLC

I wonder if part of the issue is the location of recently opened business hotels. Dorian/Courtyard, Residence Inn, Westley are not walking distance. And a few opened at the airport with the international expansion. Prices would definitely suggest there's no citywide shortage but not enough close...

Have the plans for tower 3 been approved? Are they keeping that loading area/road between Tower 1&2 and Tower 3? Seems like a missed opportunity for a courtyard/greenspace.

This is possible if they have smart water meters, otherwise it's impossible to tell when the usage occurred between reads. Although in general, I think our water pricing should move to less fixed cost and higher per m3 cost.

seems like more curbs incoming : https://calgary.ctvnews.ca/calgary-using-more-water-than-it-can-produce-officials-say-1.6917522 What I'd like more clarity on is what is the best way to address this issue? It's hard to ask people to not wash dishes, shower, etc. when restaurants, car washes...

Good picture from this CBC article. It's one of the largest water mains in the entire city.

    Alberta Provincial Politics

In a mayoral race, he was running as himself. When he's leading a party that is mostly to the left of him, he'll need to move a bit for caucus/internal politics reasons. So a big part of how the general will turn out will be how much power the NDP party actually has or if Nenshi will change...

    Calgary International Airport

Funny he says the widebodies being sold out when they had aircrafts literally ready to be delivered. Definitely clear his vision is a Southwest/Alaska model but with Canada being so large with high landing fees/taxes and a large diaspora population, how much more growth can they squeeze out of...

    Calgary | BMO Centre Expansion | 25m | 5s | CMLC

Wonder why the hotels haven’t taken off. If there really was such a shortage and so many events booked, why hasn’t anyone taken the plunge?

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

Agreed with most of what you said. We also had a recent LAP, and while I have no issues necessarily with the plan, the entire process was pretty pointless. The city staff had a plan in place and we had a bunch of “engagement” which with most low rise communities the feedback is no parking, too...
