Nothing tall yet but they have done a few concrete midrises, near Westbrook, at West District and the nearly-complete Frontier. So they have done concrete construction, even if it hasn't been the sort of heights they are doing now.
In everything but height, I prefer the new design. The previous one just had way too much going on for my liking. First and foremost, though, I am looking forward to seeing more parking lots and underutilized sites being replaced by some decent density. And 32 floors is still decent height...

Yikes, that looks pretty bad. Good news is if you look at the developer's website, there's been no updates for this project in 2 years, so hopefully it either never goes ahead, or undergoes a serious redesign before it does.
I recall hearing that with the completion of the BMO Centre and the increased number of conventions and trade shows that entails, that Calgary is now short around 5000 hotel rooms in the downtown area. That leaves room for several large hotels.
I like brick most of the time, but it just seems weird to me to only use brick on one small strip of one facade. I fear it will look out of place and ruin any design unity/symmetry.
