From Guardian:

According to the outlet, Russia’s defense ministry “reportedly claims that the decision is ‘not in any way related’” to Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Presumably due to some other war he is about to start!

He cannot win a war on 2 fronts, one with Ukraine and one with NATO. His forces are stretched so thin at the moment is a fools errand.

No way he can beat Ukraine now. Ukraine has the best of all worlds, they don’t need to worry about the economics of war, they don’t need to worry about domestically producing/financing the materials of war, and they get modern, if not the latest weaponry, plus satellite and signals intercept intelligence from NATO. All Ukraine needs to focus on is logistics, morale, leadership and fighting expertise…. of which they have aplenty. Once Ukraine has sufficient arms for 1/2 million soldiers they will be unstoppable.

I wonder if Putin will permit Russia to be invaded so he can battle NATO as part of a second patriotic war.

For Russians, repelling the Nazis in WW2 was seen as a major patrotic victory. It is one of their proudest moments.

I get the sense that Putin may try to recreate that to rebuild his standing among Russians.

The Ukraine-Russian border has essentially zero Russian soldiers - they’ve all been sent to the Donbas and Kherson. No one is invading Russia because the only point would be regime change, which the Russians themselves will manage before the decade is out. Also, Ukraine invading Russia proper will cease all support from NATO.

That begs the question..

If we do somehow cause economic and physical damage in Russia, would the UN have some sort of plans ala Iraq to pick up the pieces?

The Ukrainians have Lyman it would seem.

They've moved from relative operational silence to seriously snarky trolling.

Russia is really the the only large colonial power that didn't de-colonize after WWII. That's why you have soldiers from Asia with mongoloid features speaking Russian committing war crimes in Ukraine. They've been weaponizing their purposefully impoverished minorities to fight their wars. There's a reason Dagestan is exploding. They've already had 10x the per capita casualties of Moscow. A draft there would be brutal.

Zelensky understands this and has begun appealing to Russia's minorities to resist Russian colonialism and imperialism:

Not only that, but the citizens of some of these republics (and ex-soviet states in the east) are basically used as cheap, disposable labour - particularly by Muscovites.

Victory in Germany could easily mean hubris in Washington!
