This is good, but where will Germany get its natural gas from next winter?

This looks like an opportunity for LNG from Canada.
In time, yes. We would need to build plants to actually liquify (far more) gas and then pipelines to transport it and build marine terminals to ship it. Not things that can happen quickly, and certainly not here where pipelines are NOT popular and local opposition to an LNG plant in New Brunswick killed the idea there several years ago. (An Australian company recently walked away from its share of one in BC.) See: https://www.nrcan.gc.ca/our-natural...-fuels/natural-gas/canadian-lng-projects/5683

Norway is closer to Europe. Oh wait, Norway is part of Europe.

The payments giants Mastercard and Visa have announced that they are suspending their operations in Russia in protest over the invasion of Ukraine.

In a statement, Mastercard said that Russian banks would no longer be supported by its network and any card issued by the company outside of country would not work at Russian merchants or ATMs. Meanwhile, Visa said that it would work to cease all transactions in the country in the coming days, adding that Visa cards issued by financial institutions outside of Russia would also stop working in the country' territory.

Coal gas can be part of the mix, if push comes to shove.

On another forum I follow there have been regular posts of videos and stills of Ukrainian farmers hauling away abandoned Russian military equipment, and one poster finally quipped, 'that's it - the farmers of Ukraine now have more armour and artillery than the Canadian Armed Forces', which I thought was funny, and a little bit sad.

Ya, I was just confused by the "4 hour drive" and 'not in Toronto' comments (ok, outside by about 4km).
Oh don’t worry. It was just my frustration at Blogto’s sense of geography. They have a habit of advertising stuff from all over the province and wording it like it’s just a short journey away or advertising other things that are clearly not in Toronto. Dunno why it’s so hard for them to be honest about where stuff actually is.

Anyway, I apologize for going very off topic.

Germany's state-owned railway offers free travel for Ukrainians

From link. Dated February 27, 2022.

Cross-border German train services running from Poland will be free of charge for Ukrainians fleeing the war in their country, Germany's state-owned rail operator Deutsche Bahn (DB) announced Sunday.

Passengers wishing to make use of the option should present a Ukrainian passport or identity card, DB said.

"This will ease onward travel from the border for those fleeing," it said, adding that the measure had already been put in place.

DB said it was working in close collaboration with rail authorities in Poland, the Czech Republic and Austria, all countries through which Ukrainian refugees might pass.

It said it was also preparing for additional capacity in cooperation with Poland's rail operator in the form of additional carriages or special trains.

Up to six long-distance trains enter Germany from Poland daily, all crossing the border at Frankfurt an der Oder.

EU rail companies offer fleeing Ukrainians free travel

From link. Dated February 28, 2022.

Train operators across Europe are now offering free rail transport to Ukrainians displaced by the bloody war being waged by Russia.

Passengers with a Ukrainian passport or ID card are exempt from rail ticket charges in Poland, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, France, Belgium, and Denmark.

The decision to offer free journeys was praised by the head of the EU’s transport directorate, Henrik Hololei, who dubbed it “real European solidarity in action”.

Social media posts confirm that Ukrainians travelling on Polish trains have been provided tickets at no cost upon showing their passport.

“In times like this, it is our responsibility to help fast and unbureaucratically. And that is exactly what we are doing,” Austria’s Transport Minister Leonore Gewessler wrote on Twitter, announcing that Ukrainians are exempt from charges when travelling on OEBB trains. In addition to German, Gewessler’s message was posted in Ukrainian and English.
Germany’s national rail carrier, Deutsche Bahn, has said it is prepared to add carriages on trains running from Poland to Berlin to meet demand and, if needed, to run additional trains to boost capacity.

In a statement published Sunday (27 February), the German railway company said it aims to “make it easier for refugees to continue their journey from the [Polish] border and within Germany”.

At present, up to eight Eurocity long-distance trains run daily from Poland to Germany, departing from Warsaw, Gdansk, Przemysl (a town located on the border with Ukraine), Krakow, and Wroclaw.

Around 300,000 refugees have entered the EU from Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion, with most entering the bloc via the Polish border.

The number of displaced persons entering the EU from Ukraine is expected to reach more than one million in the coming weeks.

“We will accept anyone who needs it… We are ready to accept tens, hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian refugees,” Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said in a recent interview with the German press.

This "Russian-Ukrainian War" is wrongly named. Many Russians are against it. It was Vladimir Vladimirovich (Ras)Putin who started it. It should be called "Putin's War". Rename this thread the "2022 Putin's War".

Rubbish. The Second World War in Europe wasn't referred to as Hitler's War. Putin (and Hitler) are powerless without millions of their citizens enabling and supporting them.

There is no mushy middle, if you're Russian today (or German in 1933-45) and you’re not resisting Russia’s war on Ukraine, you're either complicit or complacent. One's motivations in either direction can vary from: self/familial preservation; to willful ignorance/disinterest; to firm belief in "the cause"; to plain old self advancement and gain.
