I've really enjoyed all the photos people have posted from the Toronto Archives, but am often frustrated with the lack of details along the bottom of the image, and would prefer to get ALL the details available in the archives, but for some reason the system they're using makes that really tough. I'd also like to geotag a bunch of the photos, starting in and around North Toronto.

After doing some research I figured out the following (if anyone could verify that I'm on the right track, or at least that the final results work, that would be great and I'll post this to my blog as well...)

Problem:

After finding a result by doing a search from http://gencat.eloquent-systems.com/toronto.html you can't just share the URL, as it has a 'session' ID in the URL that expires after a short time. ( Something long and ugly like https://gencat4.eloquent-systems.co...1_1051&PromptID=&ParamID=&CMD_(DetailRequest)[0]=&ProcessID=6000_1980%280%29&KeyValues=KEY_258058 )

What most people do is just post a link to the final image, like https://gencat4.eloquent-systems.co...source/ser1188/fl0001/s1188_fl0001_it0023.jpg which is a start, sure, but then you miss out on all the details about the image.

Solution:

Finally I realized that the KEY_258058 part of that long URL is, well, the key! If you throw all the rest of the URL away, and instead use http://gencat.eloquent-systems.com/torontodetail.html?key=258058 you can jump directly to the full details, and thumbnail, of the image (or I hope so, please give that URL a try and see! ).

Assuming this does work, I'll be adding way more pins to my North Toronto map; in this case http://wholemap.com/map/area.php?area=NorthToronto&pin=TORARCHV-1 (maybe I should use the full key in my map URL too... )

Anyway, hope this helps people add more useful links to all the fascinating images they find and post here!

Question:

Given the # at the bottom of the image, how do you do an advanced search to find it? I tried entering the whole string in the first 'Title or Number' field, but that didn't work ( in this case s1188_fl0001_it0023 and also that string but with spaces rather than the underscore). Any help would be appreciated, either as a comment, a link to help somewhere else on the web, or a polite "Dude, we've covered this 12 times in the forum, take a look at...."
Thanks!
