I thought I would start a thread for the Bradford Bypass as we don't appear to have one. MTO is currently out for public consultation on the preferred alignment:

the wider the radius the higher the capacity, basically. These ramps are roughly similar in size to those built at the 407 / 404 interchange (SB404 > EB407 is a 525m radius ramp).

MTO actually picked a few of the smaller options for the interchanges, the initial design updates were contemplating 750m radius ramps for all 4 directions at the 400.. they ended up only doing one 750m radius ramp.

Generally I agree that they could probably be way smaller though. The 750m radius ramp in particular is wayyy too large. Drop them to 350m radius (similar to the 400 / 407 interchange) would cut the footprints significantly with a minimal impact on capacity.

Why are the freeway-to-freeway interchanges so massive? They can easily be half the size.
This allows faster speeds like 80km/h instead of 40-50km/h. This prevents a backup approaching the interchange that we commonly see on the 401 to 400 and 401 to 404 interchanges. It’s one reason why the 401 is so jammed.

Can this not be addressed with wider ramps--more lanes? The 401 EB to 400 being a one lane ramp is nuts.

There is a major weaving issue with the Weston ramp being so close to that ramp too. Widening it would make that worst. The modern design would merge that Weston ramp with the 401 after the 401 to 400 ramp. Like how 407 is built.

Widening would help but as drivers would have to slow to 50 km/h (especially trucks) and aggressive tailgaters have to suddenly slamming the brakes, it'll just cause a domino effect and create a "phantom stop sign" on the highway.

Perhaps if they move the ramp to exit from the left on the collectors and much closer to Weston Rd and have it elevate a couple stories with better geometry, it would be better. Also remove the ramp from express and make it 3 lanes wide.
