The poster on Calgarypuck said those earlier renderings were from about a year ago, so it doesn't look like the design has changed much (if any?) since then.

It would be interesting to hear how much input both the CMLC and CSEC has had in the design. It already seems to ignore the Rivers District Master Plan with that massive blank wall spanning the 12th Ave length

Inside source told me it's not just a blank wall, but massing for a paneled façade with some variation (library-esque). Also some cool dynamic lighting integrations, but don't know if that's survived value engineering.

Looks like both 12th Ave and Olympic are all ground level storefront & restaurant/patio. I'm hopeful.

I think the streetwall you're concerned about is actually the 14th Ave side.

The biggest change was abandoning the inverted bowl, which makes the site much tighter and the building much taller.

I don't know why they chose this rendering to release—I bet CSEC wanted to hold off the better angles to make a bigger splash at their own news conference.
 
With the arena, the convention centre, the casino, and all the empty space reserved for the Stampede, this area was always at a high risk of being a dead zone dominated by big box-style buildings that will be unused most of the time. It didn't *have* to be that way, but every piece of news that drops seems to point more in that direction.

A vision of things to come.
 
^ It is highly unlikely to be that way. Until we see the corpses, I wouldn't start counting fatalities. People are reading far too much from CMLC being removed, which was more about if CSEC has handling all the upside risk from here on, that they wanted a manager accountable to them, not with dual masters.

^That image of the BMO Centre is actually showing part of the north side as well as the east. The side facing Olympic Way has the large arch and a ground level entrance.

It's strange that Davison released the one render. Perhaps he was trying to deflect some of the heat he has been under. CSEC and the City are likely pretty pissed as i'm sure they wanted to reveal the project on their own terms given the scrutiny it is under.

That one render was actually displayed in Council chambers after Druh Farrell asked David Duckworth to provide an image so Calgarians could see what was being talked about. This is the render Administration decided to display and it was shared by Davison and a bunch of media folks shortly afterwards. Druh's strategy was pretty apparent as she said that she doesn't support the project but could at least live with an iconic design and she feels this design isn't up to snuff. By getting at least one render publicly released I think she was trying to turn public opinion against the project and seems to have succeeded. I haven't had one person I've shown the render to say anything positive about it. Expect another battle to be fought as this goes through the DP process and CPC.
 
It was a little bit discouraging to hear during the council discussion that the CPC date has already been selected (November 28th). Not many projects get that guarantee, before even submitting for development permit. I certainly don't envy any of the staff that have to review this file, as any sort of comment to get it to comply with policy (improve the design) will be met with a probably sledge hammer, and this will just be pushed through.

Unfortunately I think "accountable to them" will translate into more value engineering, and further eroding of the aspects the public was sold on when the deal was first made.

As long as it has not been value engineered to the garbage bin, then I am more hopeful. It was a terrible render, and I do not know why they even bothered to release it. Spend the next 6 months on refining and upgrading the final design before they start anything.
