To be honest, value engineering this to cross Ellerslie at grade isn't a poor decision. The major thoroughfare is 800 meters north on the Henday. Heck, there is even Henday access immediately west of where the proposed Ellerslie LRT crossing would be on 135th.
 
Even if grade separation is a priority, why does the LRT need to be the one elevated? Would it be cheaper (and make for easier transfers from the transit centre and Park n Ride) to keep the station at ground level and have Ellerslie Road pass above or below grade?
That's a good option too.

That makes perfect sense but the City of Edmonton doesn't work that way.
 
Ellerslie will be a major transit hub with many busses coming and going the best option for circulation is to have an elevated station with access from both sides. If station is not elevated then there will be thousands of people crossing the tracks every day you know those stupid kinds of people who don’t like to obey signs because they have to run to catch their train. Speaking of people they will have to walk farther to get their bus. Elevated is preferable than the situation at Century Park where passengers have to ascend then descend a set of stairs just one change in elevation is necessary.
Who said an underpass is free? Certainly if they build it at some point in the future it could cost considerably more considering the implications it could have for the intersection to the east at 124 street. Does anyone know what the long term build out o Ellerslie road will look like? What traffic volumes are they anticipating? What kind of traffic disruptions would a level crossing create? What are the long term maintenance costs of a level crossing? As the old English saying goes “penny wise and pound foolish “. Why paint ourselves into a corner think 111 avenue.
 

If something has to be scaled back to save money, please make the parking lot smaller. 🙏

I would say go one step further and sell the land planned for the larger parking to developers and get some transit oriented development built.
