Edmonton looking at more possible changes to Churchill Square
The city is again looking at tweaking Churchill Square as Edmonton’s central gathering spot faces pressure on all sides.

An outside consultant is set to look at options for the square and will likely consult the public over the summer on any possible changes. Here's all you need to know on what could be around the corner.

Tannia Franke, supervisor of the civic precinct, said the consultant's review is in its early stages and is driven partially by maintenance costs, as just replacing paving stones is costing the city $50,000 per year.

She said there is a lot the city has to figure out and they’re keeping an open mind.

“We’re in a concept phase for that right now,” she said. “They’re going to give us a number of options and cost estimates after some consultation happens over the summer.”

Have your say on Civic Precinct surface renewal
October 21, 2016

The City of Edmonton is hosting a public open house to share information and get public feedback on proposed surface renewal of the downtown Civic Precinct.

Date: Monday, October 24, 2016
Time: 4 - 8 pm
Location:
City Hall Room, 1 Sir Winston Churchill Square

Drop in and share your thoughts on the Civic Precinct surface renewal, which is needed to improve accessibility and safety, as well as to make area maintenance more sustainable. The scope of work includes:
  • Replacement of the tiles around City Hall;
  • Integration of the 102A Avenue road closure between 99 Street and 100 Street with City Hall and Churchill Square;
  • Renewal of the East Garden turf (on the east side of Churchill Square) with a more durable surface that can accommodate area festivals and public activities.
The Civic Precinct is an important City asset: a family-friendly, lively urban gathering space in the heart of Edmonton’s downtown. The area includes City Hall, Sir Winston Churchill Square, and Centennial Plaza south of the Stanley A. Milner Library.

City of Edmonton wants to revitalize area around city hall
The area around Edmonton City Hall is going to get a makeover. What is there now is getting worn out and the city’s infrastructure branch plans on sprucing things up in 2018, around the same time the Valley Line LRT is going in at the south end of Churchill Square.

The rose-coloured paving tiles with the painted semi-circles are crumbling more and more with wear and tear. A recent estimate saw 300 of them replaced annually.

“We know that that these tiles and this surface is reaching the end of its life cycle,” Corinne Bishop, a project coordinator with the city’s infrastructure branch, said.

Edmonton festivals need space as Churchill Square partially closes
Taste of Edmonton is urgently looking for temporary digs for 2018 as Churchill Square gets set to undergo major renovations that will temporarily displace several festivals.

City administration recommended Thursday that a combined $372,500 be given to Taste of Edmonton, the Works Art and Design Festival and the Edmonton International Street Performers Festival to pay for relocation costs (utilities, facility rental fees, temporary infrastructure and additional staff) for one year.

The popular downtown gathering space will be partially closed from September this year to about April 2019 for renovations and LRT construction, meaning events will have to move.

3 Edmonton festivals want extra money to relocate from Churchill Square in 2018
Edmonton city staff are recommending a one-time funding package for three long-time festivals that are relocating in summer 2018 due to construction at Churchill Square.

The public venue will be impacted by construction projects from September 2017 to April 2019. It has been the location for The Works Art and Design Festival for more than 30 years, the Edmonton International Street Performers Festival for nearly 30 years and Taste of Edmonton for 32 years.

City staff are recommending a funding package of up to $372,500 for all three festivals – up to $110,000 for The Works, up to $90,000 for the Street Performers Festival and up to $172,500 for Taste of Edmonton. The money will be used for incremental operating expenses, additional staff, marketing and communications.
