Danforth’s Music Hall shuttered

Bailiff cites unpaid rent, seizes premises

Published On Thu Aug 19 2010

The Music Hall, a heritage building at 147 Danforth Ave., has been closed for nonpayment of rent.

A spokesperson for Sterling Bailiffs Inc. confirmed a company representative seized the property earlier this week and changed the locks, posting a notice to terminate the lease due to unpaid rent of $44,857.86.

The property is leased to Glyn Laverick, owner of Ellipsis Leisure Retail. Neither Laverick nor the property’s owner, Electra Films Ltd., could be reached for comment.

The 91-year-old building, which began as a vaudeville theatre, served for many years as a second-run movie house called The Century before undergoing renovations in 2005 and reopening as a theatre venue.

The Music Hall played host to Dancap Productions’ Toxic Avenger, which opened last Oct. 31, closing on Jan. 2. Most recently, Montreal indie band Arcade Fire played a concert there on June 11.

It's bad news. This place is a part of Toronto's history, both as a movie theatre and more recently as a concert hall and event venue. It's an attractive old building. Hope someone can put together a plan to keep it operating in some form.

Well, Arcade Fire played two surprise shows a while back. Not a bad way to go out.

Did the poor reviews and mediocre box office of Toxic Avenger play a role?
