$40-million expansion puts Edmonton's Telus World of Science on ice
The Telus World of Science will make public ice-inspired designs Monday for a $40-million expansion and renovation project set to start this spring.

Radiating lines will extend out from the original building and fold down to the ground “almost like ice shards … allowing crevasses to form, allowing light into the building and also creating waterways,” says Donna Clare, the Dialog architect in charge of the project.

The ambitious concept will tell a story about the North and about water in all its forms, Clare says.

“The imagery for the building is about glacier and ice formations. Typically, we try to avoid celebrating ice with buildings because it causes all kinds of building envelope issues,” Clare says with a laugh.

“But what we’re doing is bringing the water off the roof and allowing it to eventually form icicles (elsewhere). It brings an awareness, I think, of how important water is as a source of life on the planet … having some fun with it as an ice form and a sculptural element.”

The overhaul — called the Aurora Project — will update aging science displays and expand the 32-year-old building to 150,000 square feet from the current 130,000 square feet, science centre president Alan Nursall says.

Editorial: Gold star for science centre makeover
Science and technology are rapidly evolving fields. A centre dedicated to educating Albertans about engineering, astronomy and biology (to name just a few scientific specialties) should be flexible enough to change and adapt too.

Edmonton’s Telus World of Science unveiled designs on Monday for a $40-million expansion and renovation that will be the latest makeover to the 32-year-old venue in Coronation Park. The plan, dubbed the Aurora Project, is worthy of public and private support.

The science centre records about 600,000 admissions per year, in no small part through efforts to bring special attractions to a northern Alberta audience that supplement the permanent exhibits. In recent years that’s meant displays such as Indiana Jones & The Adventure of Archeology and Harry Potter: The Exhibition.

Families flocked to these special presentations with pop culture ties. But it’s important to remember that this also is a science centre with a mission to share and explain cutting edge knowledge with visitors.

It's funny, this morning I was reading some random thing about their Family Day programming and thinking how strange it is to have corporate-branded education centres in general. So this is extra rich:

Space expands at Edmonton's Telus World of Science
When Frank Florian looks through a telescope at the Telus World of Science, he can see solar flares and the rings of Saturn and the potential of space to awe.

But these days, the director of the planetarium and space sciences is looking closer to home, at the possibilities for the centre's new and expanded space.

Florian's worked at the centre for 30 years, almost since its beginning.

"I've seen change where we've added on little things, but this is much, much bigger and it's also a renovation of some of the spaces that are kind of dear to my heart, like the planetarium," Florian said.

The facility at 112th Avenue and 142nd Street, designed by architect Douglas Cardinal, opened July 1, 1984.

Quick Facts

TELUS World of Science – Edmonton, established in 1984, is operated by the Edmonton Space and Science Foundation, a non-profit organization. The facility, located at Coronation Park in Edmonton, comprises 14,000 square feet of exhibition space, 5 permanent themed galleries, a presentation theatre, an IMAX theatre, an observatory and a robotics laboratory.

Funding will support the renovation of the Margaret Zeidler Star Theatre, the largest planetarium in Canada. Improvements will include construction of a new entranceway, seat replacement, upgrades to electrical and HVAC systems, installation of an elevator, and the purchase of a new screen, projection system, sound baffling and stage lighting.

Funding will also support upgrades to the Space Gallery, which will see the space enlarged by 600 square feet, with new lighting and HVAC systems, refreshed exhibition design and layouts, and new information technology and projection equipment.

These enhancements are part of a broader initiative by TELUS World of Science – Edmonton known as the Aurora Project, an overall 20,000-square-foot expansion that will nearly triple the existing footprint of the facility once complete.

The Canada Cultural Spaces Fund supports the improvement of physical conditions for artistic creativity and innovation, as well as the improvement, renovation and construction of arts and heritage facilities, and the acquisition of specialized equipment.

Telus World of Science receives $3.35 million in federal funding for expansion project
The Telus World of Science is one step closer to completing a massive overhaul after receiving $3.35 million in federal funding on Thursday.

The funding will bolster a $40-million project that aims to reinvigorate outdated science displays and expand the centre’s floor plan by 20,000 square feet.

“This funding will support renovation of the Margaret Zeidler Star Theatre planetarium and the Space Gallery,” said Telus World of Science chief executive Alan Nursall in a news release.

The planetarium hasn’t had a significant renovation in 30 years.

'Mouths are going to drop': Telus World of Science planetarium theatre to feature 10K resolution
The Telus World of Science will begin a year-long construction project on its planetarium theatre, complete with a new projection system featuring a display resolution higher than any planetarium in the world.

A new phase of the centre’s $40-million Aurora Project is set to begin next week when the Margaret Zeidler Star Theatre planetarium will close and undergo renovations for a year, centre president and CEO Alan Nursall announced Tuesday morning.

It will be renamed the Zeidler Dome Theatre and the resolution of the screens will be 10K — unprecedented for theatres. To put it in perspective, IMAX movie theatre screens have a resolution of 4K.

The revamped theatre will allow visitors to go on scientific journeys, moving beyond just showing stars, Nursall said.

Frank Florian, the centre’s director of planetarium and space sciences, said with most planetarium screens having 8K resolution, this world-first will transport visitors anywhere in the universe.

“With this new 10K resolution video projection system, the stars that we can project, the images will be incredibly sharp, highly detailed, and it will make you feel like you’re right there,” Florian said.

“I think when this new theatre opens, people will come in here and their mouths are going to drop because it’s going to make them feel like they’re in these environments. It’s going to be a wow factor.”

Visitors get a look at the 3D model of the new expansion at the Telus World of Science.

The Margaret Ziedler Star Theatre is about to become one of the best of its kind in the world.

The theatre in Edmonton's Telus World of Science plans to replace its aging projectors and screen with the latest state-of-the-art 10K technology.

It's all part of a $40-million expansion project officially unveiled Tuesday by science centre president and CEO Alan Nursall.

"The Aurora project is all about making sure our infrastructure is stable and solid and our science experiences are challenging, engaging and inspirational, and meet the demands of our growing city," said Nursall.

In 2016, the science centre drew more than 500,000 visitors.

The 20,000-sq.-foot expansion will allow the centre to incorporate more science, interactivity and innovation than ever before, Nursall said.

Work on the theatre begins next week. People who have never seen a laser light show there will have one last chance during the final shows this weekend.
