So Stratosphere's Pilot development has its first row almost framed. It seemed to go up in a hurry, probably because they're bringing in modular components. Meanwhile, they've also been building out foundations, to the point of having several more rows in various stages of completion.

When I drove past the area the other day, the thing that impressed the most is how the construction has now crossed the road towards the lake and there was indications that more was starting soon. I like how the lake will soon feel like it is finally a part of the development.

On a seperate note, I noticed some large mounds of dirt being placed next to the aviation museum, just on the outside of the fence near the parking lot. Any idea what's happening there?

I walked by the work being done closest to the pond yesterday and it looks more like Streetside is maybe just doing some underground utility type work right now rather than digging basements. Given the time of year, I assume they would wait until spring to start doing the full dig out and pouring of foundations. But if it is anything like their other Blatchford project, they'll likely move quickly once spring comes, which is great.

Now let's get some of those 4-6 stories breaking ground and we'll really be cooking.

As soon as a few medium rise buildings are finished I think blatchford will seem “legit” to most people. Those will be key for density, sense of built form, hopefully a little commercial vibrancy. The exclusively townhome feel currently is a little underwhelming for what the vision was sold as

From today's Utility Committee meeting, there are currently 258 units built or under construction in Blatchford.
Another 900ish units are forecasted to be sold or under construction during the next few years.
A deal on the first multi unit building (4-6 storey) is about to close and will start construction sometime soon after that (so sometime in 2025).
City still losing money on utilities and expect it will be 2029 when it starts making money on renewable energy utilities (critical mass) - although a couple of councillors expressed they are a bit worried 2029 may be too optimistic (Cartmell, Tang).

Very interesting discussion. The councillors were all referencing a memo they got yesterday about the progress of development at Blatchford. Sure would like to get my hands on a copy of that memo!

It should be posted on the last Wednesday of this month, if I understand the schedule correctly.

Also, I added the 118 Ave shared-use path and the 119 Ave road connections to Open Maps, so hopefully that goes live soon; things like Strava will reflect it too since they draw from it.

Hopefully the city completes that planned 113 Street cycle path from Kingsway Ave to 105 Ave as it will provide a quick, safe option to get from Blatchford into Dt or even over to UA/Strathcona via bike. Route is on its 2025 bike network expansion plans.

This will be huge. Kingsway makes blatchford so much less accessible/aligned with its vision for a less car centric community. Biking and walking connections N/S are badly needed.

It's been one of my main connections to downtown as is, but it could really benefit from being more than sharrows, and from better crossings for Kingsway, 111 Ave and 107 Ave.

We also make heavy use of the old rail path by 121 Street, but it's a bit of a portage to get there.

The newly opened east exit at 118 Ave through NAIT, then south to 114 Ave and over to 96 Street is a new favourite of mine (and of course it makes it easy to get to OTTO and that bakery next to it, let alone Chinatown or Little Italy.

But, yeah, the improvements on the map slated for 113 St, 111 Ave and Kingsway Ave next summer will do so much to improve connections.

Keep in mind as well that (non-electric) bikes are allowed on the LRT at any time; I love using my bikes as a first-mile last-mile connection with the train, and it'll be really easy for you to do now that the path connects to the bikeway by NAIT.
