New Edmonton MEC store bigger, and parking is free
Edmonton’s latest MEC store hopes to rope in extra customers with a wider assortment of clothing and bicycles as well as traditional climbing, skiing and camping equipment.

MEC, formally known as Mountain Equipment Co-Operative, last weekend closed its original Edmonton location in a former Safeway store at 102 Avenue and 124 Street and moved about six blocks north to a $14-million two-storey outlet in the Brewery District.

“The old store wasn’t meeting the needs of the roughly 250,000 (members) in the Edmonton region,” store manager Craig Binch said Tuesday during a tour, adding MEC doesn’t own the building it is vacating and it’s for sale.

The new 3,800-square-metre flagship, holding a grand opening Sunday, is almost double the size of the old one and slightly larger than the other local outlet in South Edmonton Common.

This allows the 165 staff, 45 more than the former location, to offer more selection and expand such increasingly popular areas as children’s products and bicycles, where customers will be able to ride on rollers to test bikes that can cost up to $10,000.

There are almost 12,000 items, 14 per cent more than before.

New Edmonton MEC store opens in the Brewery District
Calling all outdoorsy folk: the new, bigger MEC store in the Brewery District is now open.

The new 41,000 square foot store is almost 40 per cent bigger than the existing outlet on 124 Street and 104 Avenue, which it is replacing.

The new "prairie- and city-inspired" store features more services, including a bike repair and ski service shop, a bike fitting room, and an outdoor bike-repair station.

"If the old store was a hub for outdoor activity, this one can only spin a bigger, better wheel," manager Craig Binch said in a release.

Bad bike rack design has Edmonton's Brewery District owners backpedalling
Edmonton cyclists are getting warning notices when they lock their bikes to street signs in the Brewery District. But they say their bike locks simply don`t fit around the shopping centre's newly installed bike racks.

Chelsea Butler tried to lock her bike to the racks before getting groceries at the Loblaws, but the bar of the rack was too thick for her U-lock to fit.

"I couldn't lock up both my frame and my wheel," Butler said. "I just thought this was a rack that had been designed by someone who had never ridden a bike or gotten one stolen."

She locked it to a sign along the sidewalk outside the Loblaws grocery store instead.

When she returned she noticed a warning ticket in the bike's basket. It was issued by security and said she violated traffic regulations and her bike was parked without authorization. It did not come with any type of fine.

"I was pretty annoyed and I thought it was pretty ironic so I kind of laughed at it," she said. "They didn't provide me with any alternative but to use that sign."

Not gonna lie, disappointed that the microbrewery tenant is going to be Molson. Not the least of which because their beer is swill, but also because when they left Edmonton and abandoned the brewery in 2007, it was a huge F-U to the local union workers with whom they were having a dispute.

Molson Tower being repurposed as micro-brewery, restaurant and offices
Oliver’s iconic Molson sign was taken down and sent to the trash Thursday, soon to be replaced by a smaller, more modern replica.

Molson Tower, at the corner of 104 Avenue and 121 Street, was built in 1913. The sign went up when Molson took over in 1958. The building has sat empty since 2007.

The site has twice changed hands since then and is now owned by Sun Life and First Capital Realty. The removal of the sign is one of the first steps in the owners’ $8.4-million heritage restoration. Construction work is scheduled to be finished by the spring of 2018.

After the restoration, the building will be home to a new Molson micro-brewery and four floors of office space.

“So we have a deal with Molson interestingly to come back to the site,” said Ralph Huizinga, First Capital’s vice-president of acquisitions and development for Western Canada. “But instead of a full-fledged brewery, it’s a micro-brewery targeting craft beers.”

Molson sign comes down to make way for brewery district renovations
The iconic sign atop the Molson Tower at 121st Street and 105th Avenue in Edmonton was taken down Thursday, ahead of the planned overhaul of the building.

The sign — a landmark since the 1950s — will not be returning to its perch, said Ralph Huizinga, vice president with First Capital Realty Inc., in a press release.

"We're not going to replace it with the same sign, we're going to replicate it," he said.

"This sign is incredibly heavy. It's built with large (steel) girder. We're going to put up something a little lighter, something we can affix properly to the building, but it will have the same look and feel as this one."

The sign is being removed as a safety precaution while the building is remodeled into modern restaurants, office space, and a micro brewery.
