Happy about the new announcement! A win is a win for YEG these days. But I'm also still really hoping for NYC - been dying to go and visit there as it's been many years for me.
Chicago is the third largest city in the US, similar in size to TO and a major business and economic centre for the mid west US, so I will take the win too.

NYC would be great too if that happens. Wouldn't it be nice if in the future we could have both?

SLC is perfect for business travel and will serve mostly as connections flying all weekdays. Will be a alternative to DEN and MSP connections. ORD won't be handling much for connections so it's just for travel between the two mainly. Would have been fantastic to see American or United step up with ORD.
I remember DL flying to SLC in the mid 90's on brand new planes - it was only one of maybe 4 US destinations we had at the time.

I wonder if we are getting a second Atlanta flight because I believe that red eye is necessary for using it for all of Atlanta's connection options.

Yep, they even had an unusual setup at one point in the 80s where they had a non-stop to SLC in the morning and then a second flight leaving a few minutes later to SLC with a stop in Calgary.

This was before they merged with Northwest and eventually started focusing on MSP from Edmonton.
 
So that is 13 US and International destinations now from here for Westjet, which seems fairly decent. I wonder is that a record for Westjet?

And a very interesting comment about where the planes for the additional service came from in the Investing in Edmonton section. I don't believe the airline that ceased operations had much service to Edmonton, so overall this may have worked out better for us.
