Top insiders like Elliotte Friedman have been saying that IF McDavid extends his contract with the Oilers it will be at a lower number than expected to help the team win. I would guess a short term (2-3 year) extension for McDavid somewhere between 15-16M. An agents job is to get his client the best contract he desires and if McDavid desires to take less to help his team thats what will happen.

We also made a trade this morning, acquired Connor Ingram (goalie) at a reduced cap hit for free (future considerations). Nice piece of business, Ingram is a solid NHL backup who has the ability to challenge Skinner for starts but has suffered mental health issues his entire career. He wanted a change of scenery and I respect Utah for going above and beyond to provide him one.

Savoie looks AHL and back 2 back penalties did not help.

When you made this post last week I was going to respond that I had heard different - that Savoie looked good in that game despite the 2 penalties.

But for update, according to the coach, he's been good. I guess we will see if he's been good enough.

“He’s made a strong impression right from Day One,” said Knoblauch. “He’s been working hard and his details have been good. Not only is he labelled as an offensive player, he’s worked on his details and he’s very responsible defensively. It looks like he’s ready.”

I really hope he succeeds, but he's small and I just didn't see a lot from him (small sample size).

Let's hope he is pesky, talented and puts a few in.

Rumor de jour out in Oiler land : from Kevin Karius (AM 1440) in a discussion with Frank Saravelli yesterday morning, Karius said he was supposed to be MC'ing some kind of event on Monday in the Hall of Fame/Media room in Rogers but the event had to be moved to Tuesday because the Oilers needed the room on Monday. Maybe a presser for a 97 contract extension announcement?
Also something to keep in mind for a possible 97 contract extension: October 6th (Monday) is the last day that deferred money can be included in NHL contracts (per the new rules in the new player/owner CBA). Having some money deferred beyond a new extension term would be a way for 97 to keep the annual cap hit down during the term (and thus have more $s to acquire/keep more talent during that term) while still being able to keep the total $s of the contract high enough where he would be the highest paid player in the league (i.e. best player = highest salary and also something the NHLPA likely wants). Anyway, a couple things to keep in mind as we head into the start of the season without a 97 contract extension in place.

The Edmonton Oilers announced Friday they have signed Head Coach Kris Knoblauch to a three-year contract extension through the 2028-29 season.

Knoblauch, 47, enters his third season with the Oilers after being named the 18th head coach in franchise history on November 13, 2023. Over the span of 151 regular season games, he has compiled a record of 94-47-10, which is the second-most wins league-wide in that time.

The Imperial, Saskatchewan native has guided the Oilers to back-to-back Stanley Cup Final appearances over his two seasons behind the bench, making him the first head coach in more than 55 years to reach the championship series in each of his first two seasons and just the sixth coach in NHL history to achieve the feat.

On February 5, 2025, he picked up his 80th career win behind the Oilers bench with the team’s 4-3 overtime victory in Chicago, making him the third-fastest coach in NHL history to reach the milestone by doing so in just his 123rd game, trailing only Tom Johnson (111 games) and Mike Keenan (116 games).

In January 2024, Knoblauch became the first head coach in NHL history to record two winning streaks of at least eight games before the 25-game mark of their coaching career and also helped the Oilers to a 16-game win streak, tied with the 2016-17 Columbus Blue Jackets for the second longest win streak in NHL history, from December 21, 2023 to January 27, 2024.

Can a city that prides itself on quiet wealth rise to the challenge?

“I get fired up whenever people ask me this question,” she says. “I don’t think we have a complicated relationship with polish and ambition. We’ve just been afraid to do it — but when we do, people follow. They just need to see it first.”

She is fearless in the belief that if you build it, Edmonton will back it.

Even with her husband’s long-term future unannounced at the time of our interview, Kyle McDavid insists her investment in Edmonton isn’t contingent on where the Oilers captain ends up. “I love this city regardless of whether we’re here.” She pauses. “I would have done it regardless. People have multiple businesses all over the world.”

Well the geniuses at Sportsnet figure we're gonna be out in the 2nd round and that the Panthers will 3-peat. I can see us getting the Conference final again.......at the very least. I actually think we're better than last year. With Skinner, Brown and Kane gone.....all distractions and disappointments......

I can see 4 strong lines (if they don't put two superstars on the same line, excepting power plays). Predictions are always "iffy" but here goes. I predict that the Oilers will come close to winning 80% of their games -- 65 wins/17 losses (most losses against teams that they should be able to beat).
For fun (and barring changes due to illness and injury)
Forward Lines:
Hyman -- McDavid -- Podkolzin
Howard -- Draisaitl -- Savoie
Mangiapane -- Nugget-Hopkins -- Kapanen
Philp -- Henrique -- Tomasek
with Frederic standing in for Hyman until he is back in action.

Defensive Pairs:
Bouchard and Eckholm
Nurse and Stetcher
Wallman and Kulak
with Emberson cycling in

Skinner and Pickard (2/3 vs 1/3)

Most losses will come at the front end of the season and as this team gels I think that they will be Stanley Cup contenders probably against New Jersey in the final run.
