Ivanhoé Cambridge partners with Edmonton International Airport to develop The Outlet Collection at EIA

December 4, 2013 (Montreal, Quebec) – Ivanhoé Cambridge and Edmonton International Airport (EIA) announced today that they have entered into a conditional agreement to lease approximately 45 acres of land to develop a retail outlet destination called “The Outlet Collection at EIA”, as part of the EIA’s Highway Commercial Project.

Ideally located directly adjacent to the Queen Elizabeth II Highway, south of Airport Road, Ivanhoé Cambridge‘s The Outlet Collection at EIA will feature 32,500 square metres (350,000 square feet ) of retail outlets offering value from over 85 renowned brands, all housed under one roof. The Outlet Collection at EIA will offer customers a comfortable environment and a new level of shopping experience that caters to all tastes and budgets.

“This project is an important step in the evolution of our new development program,” declared Paul Gleeson, Executive Vice-President, Development, at Ivanhoé Cambridge. “With Vaughan Mills in Toronto (opened in 2004) and CrossIron Mills in Calgary (opened in 2009) successfully established, we have created the opportunity to evolve this value-offering into a pure outlet format for other dominant markets across Canada. Branded as “The Outlet Collection,” the first of these new projects, The Outlet Collection at Niagara, is to open to the public on May 15, 2014.”

“This is great news. It means more shopping, entertainment and hospitality options, not only for passengers, but for Greater Edmonton. The airport is a self-funded not-for-profit corporation, so airport revenue that is generated by leasing the land for this project will be reinvested into building better air service for the Edmonton Region. Ultimately, this will support more flights to more places,”said Myron Keehn, EIA Vice President of Commercial Development.

Edmontonians are the highest retail-spending citizens per capita in Canada. With 7 million passengers a year, EIA is the fastest-growing major airport in Canada. Airport traffic has increased by 60% over the last 10 years and Edmonton’s 1.2 million population is expected to grow by 15% over the next decade.

Targeting a fall 2016 opening, both parties expect to be able to satisfy the mutual conditions of the agreement in the first half of 2014, at which time full project details will be announced.

Edmonton, Alberta – Ivanhoé Cambridge and Edmonton International Airport (EIA) unveiled today details about the development of the Outlet Collection at EIA shopping centre.

Ivanhoé Cambridge and EIA have made significant advances in the design and planning of Outlet Collection at EIA which will anchor the airport’s Highway Commercial Development project, a plan by EIA to create a premier shopping, office, entertainment and hotel development located adjacent to the Queen Elizabeth II Highway at Airport Road.

Edmonton’s first-and-only pure outlet centre, Outlet Collection at EIA, will feature warm modern fashion-forward districts and a contemporary dining hall within an enclosed "industrial chic" shopping environment. Since the initial project announcement in December 2013, the shopping centre’s retail area has been increased by 65,000 square feet to 415,000 square feet, and now plans to welcome more than 100 outlet brands.

The property will also benefit from new services:

- A new airport shuttle service will be in place by the opening of the centre, which will provide airport travellers with the the opportunity to easily move between the Terminal and Outlet Collection at EIA during longer layovers

- A new parcel storage service will be established to accommodate customers who buy on the way through, with pick-up service on the return leg of their travel

With Outlet Collection at EIA opening in 2017, site preparation has progressed significantly over the course of the past year, including the rough grading of the site, the design and construction of the internal boundary roads and the development of services and utilities. EIA is also advancing plans to modify the Queen Elizabeth II Highway / Airport Rd. interchange to provide direct access to the site for customers coming from the Edmonton market and beyond.

“The Outlet Collection is a major development project that will not only attract new passengers and generate revenue that we can reinvest in our airport, it will help us continue to drive economic growth for the region. Edmontonians are the highest retail-spending citizens per capita in Canada, and the city ranks as 5th largest retail market in Canada. With 8.2 million passengers a year, EIA is the fastest-growing major airport in Canada. More than 74,000 vehicles pass by EIA on the Queen Elizabeth II Highway every day.

@Hilman The revenue will be excellent for EIA, and no doubt will become a major destination for travelers and shoppers in the southern part of the Edmonton region. I'm sure I'll even find myself here at some point, but maybe once every couple of years if that.

But on the balance, I don't care for it at all. More car-dependent and car-oriented development pushing further outside the city. No doubt it will increase congestion on the QEII and the offramps to EIA itself, which is already bad enough as it is.

Was driving past the other day exterior near completion and looks like paving could start soon.
 
Premium Outlet Collection mall at Edmonton International Airport scheduled for spring 2018 opening
Those hoping to catch some special deals at the outlet shopping mall on the edge of Edmonton International Airport will have to wait a little longer.

Originally slated to open in this fall, Premium Outlet Collection will now open to the public on May 2, 2018, Sébastien Théberge, spokesman for developer Ivanhoe Cambridge said Wednesday.

“Opening a shopping centre is a project of large magnitude, with a multitude of factors requiring timing to work for everyone,” Théberge said.

“Although construction was on time last winter, there are a number of retailers that, from a capital allocation perspective, preferred to open in spring of 2018.”

Apparently, there is supposed to be a Costco next to the mall closest to the main road into the airport. That seems like a terrible idea for traffic management in the area, given that this is our International Airport. Do local travellers really want to face that type of traffic after a flight? I get that some of the tourists might, but for those that live in Edmonton, I just want to get home and to bed after I return from a business trip, or even a leisurely trip.

On a happier note, I'm truly curious to see what type of "Premium" stores we get in this place, and how premium they will really be. I feel it could go really good, or be meh like Cross Iron Mills. If it is the latter, I will probably never step foot in this place.
