We have a thread for the last Electoral Boundary discussions (https://urbantoronto.ca/forum/threads/new-electoral-boundaries.19091/) NOTE TO MODS: Maybe add "2012" to THAT Thread's title??

The proposals for 2022 are now available: https://redecoupage-redistribution-2022.ca/com/on/med/aug1922_e.aspx

For Toronto there are some quite interesting changes, the loss of a seat in the 'east end' and some tidying up of local boundaries and names. The strange split of St Lawrence between 'Toronto Centre' & 'Spadina-Fort York' has been corrected as the new southern boundary is moved a block south, from The Esplanade/Mill Street to Lake Shore Blvd. 'Spadina-Fort York' has a new (and better) name 'Spadina-Habourfront'. 'Parkdale-High Park' is now 'Tiaiaik'on-High Park'.

The normal practice is then to redistribute the Provincial ridings to fit the new Federal constituencies and the Municipal Wards to fit the Provincial. If Toronto loses a Federal Constituency, will we also have one less MPP and one less City Councillor?

On the boundaries.......I made particular note of that fact that they no longer propose to adhere to the old divider between NorthYork/East York/Toronto and Scarborough (Victoria Park Avenue) and are instead using Warden over much of that distance.

Likewise the Humber River is no longer universally a boundary line in the west.

I tried to capture as much of the new Toronto map as possible in the image below which being sufficiently zoomed to offer detail. I've cut off a bit of Scarborough-Rouge River on one side and a bit of Etobicoke Lakeshore on the other.

Below is the direct link to the mapping program:

Liberty Village being stuffed into the High Park riding is quite a change. Candidates there will certainly face a huge change in demographics toward what now only exists sporadically in the current riding like the "High Park North" neighbourhood.

Looking at this more outside of Toronto, there's a lot of wild changes in there.
Some new ones that standout:
  • The new Hamilton-Stoney Creek-Grimsby-Lakeshore riding: maybe someday everything between the escarpment and the lake on that side will be one riding?
  • Adding St.Thomas into a London riding
  • Six Nations moved out from Brantford and into Haldimand-Norfolk: there will totally be no racist reaction to that in H-N, right?
  • The Guelph riding shrinks by having the newest suburbs removed

The Humber riding is interesting for sure, the demos and SES of the Kingsway are so different than York/Weston.

York Centre should be renamed Downsview. York Centre means nothing really and is just overly confusing with better-known Yorks around it.
Except for the fact that with redistribution, it's finally jettisoned everything W of Keele, i.e. the real heart of Downsviewburbia. Or at this point, Downsview *Park* would be a more appropriate (and fed-flattering) name...

These names are never perfect regardless. It's also interesting how Etobicoke's and Scarborough's names were always hyphenated, even after amalgamation. But North York didn't get the same honour (despite arguably being the most established city after Toronto). It might also be fun to rename Eglinton-Lawrence as "Crosstown," but now I'm probably getting silly.
