Let‘s hope we don’t give away water for free like we do for bottle water firms. These fruit ops usually need thousands of cheap, undocumented labourers.

Not undocumented............but: (from the article)

So this is a test move by Driscoll''s and one other large producer, who taking a look-see at the economics of producing in an area with a shorter, ie. not year-round growing season.

Not yet huge; and as one reads, not likely to make a massive dent in California berry production, but could see a statistically significant shift.

In part this is because of drought issues; but also growing expenses of other types; including transportation costs.

I expect to see this shift in an even large way with lettuce. Its very water-intensive; also, its well suited to green-house growing.

I have no clue what varieties commercial growers plant but native wild raspberries and blackberries have fairly low water demands, are pretty drought tolerant and thrive under a wide variety of conditions. No doubt they have created a year-round 'everberry' variety that are probably as tasteless and their strawberry cousins.
