1. Guangzhou's new TV Tower glimmers in all sorts of colours at night. It's not a static display - the colours change constantly.

4. By day, it's a long wait to get up to the top. Unfortunately, a smog problem persists in this part of southern China.

9. Zhujiang New Town is a new central business district under construction in the eastern part of town. The TV tower is supposed to finish off the axis.

12. The stadium at the bottom was a major venue for the 2010 Asian Games.

17. The lattice structure looks great from the outside, but it blocks a lot of views inside.

23. Cultural facilities have been added to the new central business district. Guangdong Museum already saw long line-ups early in the morning for free entrance. I had to buy admission to a special exhibition to gain immediate access.

Thanks for the excellent pics hk. I have just got to get to China one day. So many huge cities I know nothing about and can't even pronounce their names.

The Chinese collection in their Museum doesn't appear to compare all that favourably with Toronto's ROM collection.

That was from only one tiny part of one exhibit at the museum.

53. Back on ground level, the smog seemed to have disappeared and the skyscrapers are clearly visible across the Pearl River.

Thanks for the pics. I was last there in 1997 so basically everything must have changed. I just can't imagine what life would be like to live in one of those massive residential tower complexes. Maybe street-level photos would give a better idea. They look even less intigrated into the urban fabric as our large complexes like St. James Town and Cityplace.

I don't have many street-level photos of the newer areas :

Great shots. I was there in 1991 when the city had few cars. I cycled around town with a million other people on bikes....it was completely unrecognizable to me when I returned in 2002....the change in that amount of time is staggering...and to think we can't even build a subway line in Toronto
