The Hamilton Series continues with Stoney Creek, an eastern suburb of Hamilton on the south shore of Lake Ontario. This is mostly "old town" Stoney Creek. Many people don't realize that largely suburban Stoney Creek has a downtown.

Stoney Creek was first settled just after the American Revolution by United Empire Loyalists. Most of Stoney Creek is typically suburban, this is the "old town" along King St.

This monument commemorates the site of a decisive battle in which the outnumbered Canadian Militia defeated the Americans during the War of 1812.

This is Battlefield House, now a museum.

Nice. I spent alot of my childhood in stoney creek. Its a shame most of the downtown has been "stuccoized" When did they change the front of battlefield house??? It used to be the same as that piece on the left. Now it looks like they've taken stucco to that too!

Is this a series moving east?

Given what it is, I'd imagine the Battlefield House stucco has some serious archaeological reasoning behind it--sure ain't a case of let's-slap-on-the-Dryvit.

Oh, and that brown brick Romanesque church has what's surely the most ill-advised 60s/70s Modern ground-floor addition (the photos here don't do it proper injustice)

I wonder who thought it would be a good idea to surround the nice old bricks of a church with a one-storey addition that looks like a small town post office from the 70's? The stucco is very popular these days too.

Good pictures flar. I will join those who don't like to see the stucco on Battlefield House. I think it's unfortunate that they couldn't restore such a historic structure while respecting the original appearance.

Unless--I repeat--the stucco (or perhaps we should call it "roughcast", for archaeology's sake) is indeed a restoration meant to "respect the original appearance". Yeah, maybe not the appearance recent beholders have grown accustomed to, but...

Over in Etobicoke, Montgomery's Inn was covered in roughcast until a 1960s restorationist got so enthalled by the bare masonry, he left it naked...

Stoney Creek,Ontario: an interesting place!

Flar: Good Stoney Creek pics-older suburbs have so much more to offer than recent sprawl places anyday! That battle monument reminded me a bit of the classic Chicago Water Tower-it is somewhat similar in appearance. Hamilton Mountain is always appealing to me! LI MIKE
