Wow, that's so gorgeous. It's so 'Ontario' too. Hmmm, I'm getting the urge to move to Hamilton.

Other than "the economy, stupid", why is it that Hamiltonians seem to know better than to retrofit to the hilt, much less rip down and (mini-)McMansionize?

I'm not sure what the heritage designation means for renovations and such, but it looked to me like this neighbourhood is mostly average middle class people who wouldn't be able to afford to McMansionize. I'm sure that some of the larger homes pictured contain wealthy people, but it's kinda nice that many of these nice solid homes are not too far out of reach. This hood is also very well kept compared to the neighbouring areas. I also find it strange that this neighbourhood in particular has a heritage designation when there are many areas in Hamilton with older and more architecturally significant housing (not to diminish the housing in this hood, which is nice).

The St.Clair Heritage District-Another nice thing about HML!

Flar: I read your description in your post before mine-you mention that this area is affordable-the houses look great with solid brick and stone construction-even smaller houses like in pic#31-like that #77 house and the row in pic#45. This area looks really nice-it looks like one of HML's best neighborhoods. Another great photo tour,Flar! LI MIKE

I must thank "flar" for these pics. A friend provided the link to one series, and I just had to see the rest.

Your photo threads continue to strengthen my belief that Hamilton is the most underrated city in Canada.

You and me both. The potential is spectacular. Really, the only real defining difference between what makes Toronto Toronto and what makes Hamilton Hamilton, is the economy and all the facets thereof (strength of, sectors, etc etc etc).

If they ever build an electrified Lakeshore line with frequent service, I will consider relocating there, especially if I have children.

I could buy a restored Edwardian house in an urban neighbourhood for less than a semi amid the sprawl of Vaughan.

I have a Nikon D50 with Nikkor 18-55mm and 55-200mm lenses and I process the photos using GIMP, a free program like Photoshop. I usually adjust the photos using levels or curves and apply unsharp mask. The saturated colour is from overcast skies and using the cloudy white balance setting on the camera.

And I also think Hamilton is underrated ;)
(I wasn't too enthusiastic about moving here 5 years ago)

So would many, many other people. I've been saying this for years. I just don't understand how politicians fail to understand the effect it would have on their city. Guess transit just isn't on people's minds.

I think the GO line is going to be electrified, but who knows. As far as politics, municipal politics are usually bad, but Hamilton's are the worst I've seen. Petty infighting, agenda dominated by suburban issues, backward thinking, self loathing. Right now the city has the gift of $400 million for transit and they will waste it on BRT because smallminded suburban councilors don't think Hamilton is good enough for LRT. To them the lower city is a complete write off.
