Central
Hamilton, Ontario

Central is one Hamilton's original neighbourhoods, the others being Beasley, Corktown and north Durand. Quite a bit of older housing stock and some industrial areas remain in the northern part of the neighbourhood. The southern part is almost entirely gone, a victim of urban renewal projects and apartment buildings. Parts of Downtown Hamilton as well as Hess Village fall within the "official" boundaries of Central. As with the Beasley tour I am only showing the "neighbourhood" parts.

Hamilton - the City that keeps on giving. I'm looking forward to exploring this area in the spring. Thanks again flar for another fantastic tour!

Ye Olde Hamilton-Another good tour,Flar!

Flar: Another good photo tour of Olde Hamilton! I want to mention these pics as well as an observation that I will note that Hamilton and Toronto definitely have their own row house and brick/stone style most notably marked by the peaked roofs that many of the older stock have as compared with, say the SE Pennsylvania or Baltimore styles of brick/stone construction.

#1-A corner store that reminds me of old Philadelphia neighborhoods.
#2-Nice old houses #10-Nice green color of those stone window frames.
These pics remind me of Philadelphia/SE PA: #3,14,23(With small arched back access way),39 and #67(somewhat).
#15-As mentioned by Mustapha this is an interesting driveway entrance.
#21-Classic Canada Custom House "Victoria Regina" -nice!
#57-Mac Nab St.N neat RH types.
#72-Interesting single level RH's.
#80-Neat stone front house on right.

You have posted some great picture tours in the past year!
Happy New Year 2009! Long Island Mike

Another great collection of photos. I did time in Hamilton for a couple of years in the late 80's (my job took me there). I was pretty miserable at first, but a love affair quickly bloomed. The people and the city are so real, and grounded. These photo sets bring back such great memories.

Great photos! I think if I was to do anything to Hamilton I would start with a tree planting program. I wonder why most neighbourhoods south of Main St seem to have no trees lining the streets.

There are several rows with a central carriage entrance in the middle, must have been stables behind the houses or something.

Hamilton's early settlers were United Empire Loyalists, most of whom came to Hamilton from New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. This must explain the style of much Hamilton housing. The one storey cottages and small wood frame houses are most likely remnants of Hamilton's earliest housing. Many of the houses shown here are later 19th century replacements of small or poor quality earlier housing, thus the mix of different eras of housing in this neighbourhood.

You mean north of Main :) Looks like in many cases the area in front of the house is used for either Hamilton's infamous too-many-laned roads or for driveways.

"Hairspray" (2007) set in early 1960's Baltimore, filmed exterior shots in Hamilton and Toronto. The film's Location Manager caught the similarities in style to Baltimore's row houses and neighbourhoods
