This video mentions five-over-one condos being prevalent in the United States, copy-paste fast-food restaurant franchises and hotel franchises, and skyscrapers looking similar in various cities.

Though not mentioned in the video, Toronto is succumbing to some of these trends, explaining why our condos look so similar and why many fast-food restaurants and hotels in Toronto look so similar.
 
Given that the market tends towards standardization like this (due to efficiencies/economies of scale) - is policy the only realistic remedy to this phenomenon? I'm not usually a fan of top-down decisions around style/design but I fail to see another option - if this is something we as a society want to avoid.
