NYC is just one of those magical places, a seemingly endless sea of humanity and urbanity. I've been several times but it still manages to knock my socks off. I just returned from a four-day visit - ended up taking hundreds of photos. Here's Part I.

FINANCIAL DISTRICT

The beautiful American International Building from my hotel room.

The NYSE. The entire building is barricaded so no vehicle can approach.

And at night...

The beautiful Woolworth Building from Broadway.

GREENWICH VILLAGE

That's a huge amount of cow.

Now we know where the Morgan design came from.

Some sort of Hare Krishna festival going on at the time.

Managed to catch some of the parade. Yay.
DSC03184.jpg

What's that building called again?

EAST VILLAGE

Great Afghan restaurant in the East Village... mmm...

CHELSEA

Look at the size of this mofo apartment complex.
DSC03197.jpg

This old warehouse would make for great loft space. Lots of industrial conversions going on in Chelsea... sort of like the Distillery District on steroids.

"New Joisey" from across the river.

THE SUBWAY

One of New York's classy subway entrances.

All by myself in the train.

Many stations have been re-done... Rector St. used to be a mess.

Doodads and pippypoos at 110th St.

Yup, it happens in NYC too.

HARLEM

A large Islamic presence in Harlem... that and evangelical Christians. A very cool vibrant 'hood in transition with some of the most beautiful homes I have ever seen.

Gentrification has arrived... not the Harlem we're used to hearing about.

RANDOM CITY SHOTS

A quaint European cafe on Houston St. Watched some of the Argentina/Ivory Coast match there.

I think this is Broadway... can't remember.

Wow, those DCers are really pissed.

There's that building again.

Hope you enjoyed Part I... watch for Part II!

Absolutely loved part one and can't wait to see part two (and so on).
NYC is an amazing city. No doubt about it. And good to see Harlem blooming once again.

Truely amazing, esp. those canyons. NY is one huge city.

Magnificent pictures of the magnificent city. More, more!!

One thing I notice about New York compared to Toronto is that many of our main streets are lined with 2-3 story buildings, which seems like a horrible waste of prime space. In New York everything seems to be at least 5 floors.

Agree, but not even 2-3 stories. A Basement and a floor over it is all what you can see in the main Toronto streets including a good part of Yonge street too.
But, we didn't experienced yet Manhattan sindrom as New York did 50 years ago. A battle with NIMBISm has just started in this town and the result is already known. Why ? 'Cause it
can not be otherwise. Unstopable urban sprowl doesn't give us
another alternative except bigger density and taller buildings...
much taller, whether our 'citizens' (most of which are in love with low rise) like it or not...:::evil

Danforth would look great lined with three to five storey buildings.

I love that building as well. Didn't realize it dated back to 1931. I would have thought 40's or even 50's.
