I grew up not too far from the Lachine Canal. Nice to see it looking so pristine and well-kept. To think that there was a time where people wanted to fill it in.

Thank you for the great pictures. There are many possibilities for good shots around Montreal. So many of the streets have "character", that je ne sais quoi which creates so much visual interest.

^Why did they want to fill it in?

The usual 1960's "it's out of date" attitude was part of the motivation. Also, it was viewed as a potential danger. There was a concern about people falling in, and the water and canal bottom were quite polluted.

At one time there were thoughts being floated about closing up the Rideau Canal in Ottawa for some of the same reasons. Now it's a UNESCO Heritage site.

Montreal in colors...Nice!

Martin: Good Montreal pics-I would like to mention these:
#5,13,27-neat rowhouse pics-especially those stone houses in pic #5
#6-This canal looks European to me...
#22-These rowhouses on this street remind me of Philadelphia.
#35-Apple Store-at 1321 Rue St.Catharine W. location (thanks to the Apple Website)I presume? I am in one here on LI typing this post! Long Island Mike
