on the way to the street fair
a pleasant surprise! one car parking space on st-viateur street in my neighbourhood eliminated in favour of bike parking. this just goes to show how efficient bicycles are: not only are they speedy, non-polluting and great for your health, you can park a dozen or more in the same space a single car would take.
a new median for st-joseph boulevard, which replaces an old crumbling concrete one and at least makes an attempt to return trees to the boulevard, which was once a minor commonwealth avenue in its scale and greenery.
at mont-royal avenue, thick clouds obscure the top of mount royal. a sign of things to come...
the street fair
rain puts a damper on the street fair (ha ha), so we head downtown. this is the corner of sherbrooke and park.
down to ste-catherine street...

saturday afternoon, there's a sidewalk sale on bernard street in outremont, a few blocks from my place.
typical outremont architecture, on lajoie.
descending into outremont station, i hitch a ride on the blue line to...
the jean-talon market
emerging three stops later at de castelnau station, there are plenty of loft conversions in progress.
on de castelnau street, between the metro and the market...
i arrive at the market. opened in 1933, it is one of the largest public markets in canada. it's open year-round, seven days a week, and contains dozens upon dozens of fruit, vegetable and flower vendors, restaurants, butchers, bakeries, cafes and more.
lychees must be individually selected and examined before purchase.
watermelons require an even more vigorous inspection. three steps to finding the perfect melon:
1. caress it.
2. pick it up, hold it to your ear and knock against it with your fist.
3. stare at it intently for several minutes.
on jean-talon street, heading to the metro...
transferring to the green line.
downtown, on ste-catherine street...
cutting through the mcgill ghetto on the way to the street fair.
the street fair, again
time for a good white beer (blanche de cheval blanc, from a good local microbrew).
at the fringe fest, a large crowd shows up to listen to a band called the quebec connection...
time to walk home for dinner.
