salut tout le monde. it's been two months since my last montreal photothread. this can be blamed on the solid month of rain we had from mid-october to the week before last: twenty-nine days of rain. four o'clock sunsets. drowned leaves. you'll forgive me for wanting to hurl myself and my camera in front of an oncoming metro train.

but, as final fantasy sings, "montreal might eat its young / but montreal won't break us down." so take that, you old whore -- you haven't killed me yet.

Amazing pics, as usual. I do have to say though, after being told how well Montrealers dress ( and how fashionable they are (usually by Montrealers, especially in comparison to dowdy Torontonians), I've never really noticed anything but average dressed people in all the pics I've seen - and I certainly don't notice hoards of well dressed people when I'm there.

I think the beauty of the city just makes people seem better dressed than they really are .

Montreal council votes to rename Parc Avenue

Montreal city council voted to rename Parc Avenue after former Quebec premier Robert Bourassa on Tuesday, despite the opposition of thousands of people who fought the move for weeks.

The council voted 40-22 in favour of the highly contentious proposal, which drew opposition from thousands of people who reside or work around the street.

Some of the opponents who had packed into city hall Tuesday morning booed Mayor Gérald Tremblay following a few moments of stunned silence after the vote result was announced.

Others stormed city hall's entrance and had to be physically restrained as certain councillors left the building.

Mario Rizzi, who lives near Parc Avenue and has helped organize various protests over the past month, said the vote disappointed many people.

"The councillors, and the mayor disappointed us. We had confirmation from some councillors [who were going to vote against the proposal], and then they flip-flopped. Clearly there is no democracy on this. We have 40,000 names on a petition against this idea."

Wow, renaming Parc Avenue. That sucks. I have lots of youthful memories from that neck of the woods.

I remember when Dorchester was renamed Rene Levesque- it didn't sit well with the Anglo population of Quebec at the time. I generally don't like renaming streets- especially if there is significant historical attachment to the original name. However there are some exceptions- for instance I wouldn't mind seeing Blue JAys Way renamed again. I thought that naming was really corny and contrived.
