Knack is still my guy but I’ve got to admit, Michael Walters’ policy plans are certainly more exciting and ambitious than anything Knack has put out. It’s probably more a testament to the honesty that Knack has, keeping his campaign goals within scope and reasonably achievable… But still… Some highlights from Walter’s plan for arts/culture, released yesterday:

  • Make Whyte Ave feel like Fringe every summer weekend in a 2026 pilot by closing 82nd Avenue to traffic for two blocks, between Gateway Boulevard (103rd street) and 105th Street
  • Roll out a Main Street Accelerator program to fill vacant storefronts with live music venues, entrepreneurs, startups, and cultural spaces, using incentives and quick-lease models
  • Appoint a Music Industry Development Officer, following the lead of other music cities by hiring an industry liaison to coordinate music sector development, with initiatives that will breathe new life into main streets

I like inspiration.

His idea to make Edmonton a film industry hotbed is pretty lofty though given the province's financial backing for the industry down south and Trump's recent proposal of 100% tariffs for any US productions made outside the country - which in essence would kill or badly wound already established industries in Canada.

👍, I like Tim Cartmell’s proposals- like Fare Gates at all Edmonton LRT Stations 🚉 in 🇨🇦 & more LRT beats is definitely needed- (as some LRT passengers smoke cigarettes 🚬/ e-cigarettes while onboard a moving train) thinking no one will notice or catch them doing it✅.

Tim Cartmell has my support for Mayor.

I took the survey. Results show Anne Stevenson as my best candidate for O-day'min. However, this survey must be on meth because I find it hard to believe that Ron Billingsley is my best choice for Mayor! For the mayoral candidates that matter, Andrew Knack has a slight edge over Michael Walters in my survey results.
I think it's useful as a means of seeing if your top pick candidate has some issues you disagree with, and vice versa. I'm certainly not voting for the candidate that's been "matchmaker" selected for me, but this did show me some of Cartmell's views which I didn't know I agreed with.

Plus it forces a brass tacks response in an election where too many candidates are running on ideological pillars.

Yes, I feel he is trying to offer some new ideas and vision rather than just defend or oppose the status quo which is nice. I suppose the film industry idea fits with some of the other cultural parts of his platform, but agree it is probably not likely in the short term, particularly the given recent US actions.

EDBA Mayor's forum this morning.

Good to hear from the top 4, but still wanting to learn more from each and have one really stand out.

Lots of focus on expanding the Arts impact on Downtown, safety and reducing impediments to getting to and from Downtown.

Journal reporting less than 100 in attendance - maybe not a great turnout from our dt business community for an EDBA event? (Especially since some in attendance were probably officials from each campaign).

I read there was discussion about city centre mall. Did EDBA moderate and ask about the 101st empty site from our favorite developer and how much longer it's going to be left in a state of rubble?

I didn't see any ads for this. Is the EDBA asleep or something?
Mind you, I wouldn't have been able to attend since I was in meetings at work all morning.

As for ECC, I know Michael Walters had plans. Haven't heard from Knack yet.
Tower 101? I wanna know too.

Calgary's current mayor Gondek made proposal during one of their final council meetings prior to election break - it's to begin pilot to end open drug use.

"Bylaw would give more authority to peace officers to seize, transport, and dispose of unknown substances, an analysis of the approaches taken by other Canadian municipalities who have worked to ban open drug use, as well as court diversion programs like community courts."

“A pilot program through Community Court will ensure those violating the law are held accountable while also being connected to supports that can help them get on a better path,” she said. “This is about restoring confidence in public spaces and creating real solutions for Calgarians.”

Lastly, the mayor is asking that a letter be sent to the provincial Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services as soon as possible to request transit and peace officers be given enhanced authority to seize, transport, and dispose of unknown substances. She wants this process to be expedited.

Is banning open drug use being talked about in Edmonton by any of the candidates or is it already banned but just not enforced?

Open drug use is already banned under the Controlled Substances and Drug Act. The police have the power to confiscate, arrest, detain, and charge people for open drug use.

Near as I can tell this is about giving bylaw officers similar power. Which Edmonton explored. But they will run into the same issues, bylaw isn't really equipped/trained for this kind of confrontation and with Calgary having a whopping 90 bylaw officers total, it won't make a noticable dent.

Maybe I missed hearing about it, but I had no idea this was happening and probably would have went if I did. However, it sounds like there was a good discussion and questions related various downtown issues.

While I don't agree with everything said, I do agree the current council has not done a very good job in dealing with the problems or trying to improve and promote downtown.
