If this be an example of the new " conservative " logic, it must surely feel like lead weight in the pit of the stomach for any Red Tories still lurking about.
Or any fair-minded and principled politicians of any stripe.

He's about to get his one-uppance, and I'm sure the knives are already out at OntCon HQ. He's a liability, not a leader. And one of the biggest liabilities? Inward investors. Even dyed in the wool blue cons know danger when they see it. The Cons can kiss a lot of their donors good-bye when being associated with such thuggery becomes a liability for their business value.

Next: a ferris wheel and monorail (and casino) for Ontario Place.

Waterfront Toronto is in real danger. Ontario Place as a public park is in real danger. The King Street Pilot is in real danger. Our bike lanes are in real danger. Our transit system is in real danger.

Toronto has to fight Ford on this power grab because if he'll take away something as big as our city's democracy, he'll come for the other things too.

We're a long way from that. Breathe deeply.

I don't care for Mr. Ford on any number of levels but this is Chicken-Littling. The sky is not yet falling nor is it in immediate danger of so doing.

There are real risks to his ongoing governance, but those are not yet fully apparent and rather unlikely to be the items you've highlighted.

Don't let your guard down, don't give Mr. Ford a free pass; but do relax just as bit.

I don't think I'm exaggerating. It's only been 3 weeks. Ford has come for our local democracy. Toronto's specifically and exclusively. 3 weeks. We got 4 years to go.

I'm afraid MetroMan might be right. When you give someone like Doug power he needs to use it. Who knows what he'll try if he thinks he can get away with it. I don't know what's up his sleeve, but I'm sure we haven't heard the last of his attacks on Toronto.

^I agree in so much as if unopposed, Ford will be even more intoxicated with power. It is necessary to show resistance, and to start legal processes where warranted to show the limitations of what he can do.

This is a brilliant move on Vaughan's part, and ostensibly far more damaging and immediate than starting court action:

I agree too. He holds so much power and is vindictive as all hell. That's a dangerous combination.

From a different thread
Mike Harris "I am the most hated Premier of Ontario"
Doug Ford "Hold my beer"
I have never seen a list of "experts" ranking of premiers. Here is my list. I only include those with over 2 years so that there is a fair chance to judge them. As such, although Ford is off to a terrific start, I won't rank him for a couple of years.

From two personal accounts, I've heard people are very concerned at Cancer Care Ontario and Metrolinx. When cuts inevitably occur, expect it to hit crown agencies and corporations, with schools, hospitals and most ministries largely unscathed. Ford will claim he 'cleaned out the swamp' without firing a 'single front line nurse or teacher.'

Well, messing up the cancer file is a surefire way to lead to bad headlines. Ditto Metrolinx/transit.

Ok, late news release on a Friday with a completely disingenuous title.

https://news.ontario.ca/mcys/en/201...ce-to-help-more-people-get-back-on-track.html

What's claimed in the title is helping people get back on track, ie. off social assistance. (fine, so far as it goes)

What's really happening. They've nixed the increase in assets and increased employment income without penalty announced by Wynne's government back in the spring.

They've also announced an increase in benefits of 1.5% which would be fine if not for the fact its below inflation and 1/2 what Wynne had promised, and less than 1/5 what the NDP had promised.

They're also winding down the 'basic income experiment without letting it even get far enough to draw a proper conclusion.

They've also thrown in that they've given themselves 100 days to develop a new 'sustainable' plan for social assistance. A euphemism from this government that is not overly promising.

The curious thing is the Wynne plan was actually inline w/conservative values in that it reduced the poverty-trap effect and increased the incentive to work.

It wasn't good enough, frankly, but it was a move in the right direction.

*****

What's this deal w/the announcing your going to change something, and then study what the change should be after?

Is the sky falling? No

But is this something worth getting ticked over.........yes.
