I've always been curious as to the number of dedicated parking spaces downtown, I found some articles that point to the development of surface lots over the last 40 years that is quite interesting.

Map TO came up with an estimate of approximately 40% of the surface lots which have been redeveloped from 1978 to 2019. Its not exact science but an interesting indication of how far development has come.

thought I would update that image even further to 2020, since quite a few lots have closed in the last few months:

Yet as a downtowner I've never had difficulty finding a parking space. When we four go to the Eaton Centre it's easier and cheaper to drive and park than to take TTC.

In some European cities, they have blocks of garages, separate from the apartments and homes. Some of them are even converted to homes.
